Canada election: Why it’s easier to vote in Canada than the US
BBC ^ | September 19, 2021 | Robin Levinson-King

Perhaps it's no surprise, but when it comes time to vote, Canadians are very good about doing it politely, and in queues.

While Americans are still embroiled in a bitter feud over voting rights and the outcome of the 2020 election, their neighbours to the north are hardly breaking a sweat as they head to the polls to vote in their country's general election on 20 September.

Things like widespread advanced voting, mail-in ballots, and federally-run elections seem to make it easier for Canadians to show up at the polls - voter turnout in Canada was higher (62%) than in the US (56%), according to data from Pew Research that looked at the 2016 presidential election and the 2019 Canadian federal election.

Perhaps I'm biased, being a Canadian myself, but there is a certain type of article, where the Canadian stereotypes are played up in the oh-so-genuinely Canadian passive-aggressive of comparisons of superiority versus the US. I utterly DESPISE my fellow countrymen, who continue to play into these very clichés and tropes that make so many Americans unable to stand us. And the fact that it's the Beeb that's doing it... OY. Guess the next time I might meet some US Freeper in person, I fully deserve to have beer poured on my head as an act of contrition... :P

I’m more interested in which country is easier to CHEAT in.

For that, I’d say the country that has BLM ‘counting’ the votes in all major cities.

A heads-up for the BBC: Easier does not always mean better. The most important thing about an election is that it be fair. “Easy” is only a secondary condition.

Isn’t the UK easier? You could never get away with the types of conditions found in Philadelphia, Detroit or Atlanta which make so many Americans question the validity of the results.

There have been instances of fraud in some Canadian elections in the past, but I would say there is not much general sentiment (among conservatives) that there is systematic or widespread fraud. Part of the reason for this is that party assigned scrutineers are at all the polling stations (including advance polls), and party workers usually know within 5-10 votes how many each party has in various polling stations (which are broken down into fairly small areas and reported) so any really serious fraud would come to light. There is only a small mail-in vote most years, this year might be different so everyone is keeping an eye on how that plays out.

There is only a weak equivalent of corrupt big city Democrat run “machines” in our political system. We definitely don’t allow the dead to vote here, lead yes, but vote no.

Exactly, more Americans do not need to go vote because others Americans are voting for them, sometimes voting for hundreds of Americans.... 🤣

Just wait until September 21, 2021 and if Justin Trudeau is overwhelmingly re-elected, there will be hoards of angry Canadians.

I'm okay with mail-in ballots as long as you can prove that John Doe at 123 Pine Street Springfield, IL voted for Bozo the Clown for POTUS. But we have not developed that system yet so the temptation for "fraud" is too great.

So we should limit absentee ballots to our military serving away from their homes.

“Exactly, more Americans do not need to go vote because others Americans are voting for them, sometimes voting for hundreds of Americans.”

Great point! It’s so easy to vote in the US that many here don’t ever remember doing it! So this comparison is bogus...it’s easier here.

Gee, I wonder if the BBC is pimping the Biden agenda here???

advanced voting
mail-in ballots
federally run elections

I guess the Canadians do not allow and that is why these things are not mentioned:
No ID required voting
Motor Voter Registration
Drop boxes
Mailing ballots to everybody on dirty registration rolls
Ballot harvesting
ete, etc

We haven't developed that system yet because it completely undermines the core principle of a secret ballot. Why the hell would you want anyone to know the contents of your ballot?

The best way to minimize voter fraud is to eliminate voting by mail ENTIRELY. You show up to vote at a polling station and verify your eligibility to vote right there on the spot. Period ... and no exceptions.

I may be wrong about this, but I’ve always been under the impression that voter registration in Canada was somehow tied to their equivalent of our Social Security number — which makes it easier to identify cases of potential fraud simply by cross-checking the voting records against tax filings and hospital records.

“””In 2014, the Conservatives introduced the Fair Elections Act that barred Elections Canada from encouraging people to vote - it was only allowed to inform people how and when to vote and eliminated the vouching system, which let voters with proper identification vouch for the identities of others in the same polling location.

At the time, the chief electoral officer expressed concern this would disenfranchise voters, and opposition parties accused the Conservatives of voter suppression. Many of the act’s provisions were repealed when the Liberals came into power.”””

Buried in the BBC story is this snippet. It appears the Canadian Liberals made sure voting without an ID remains in place

Don't worry - there are PLENTY of hateful, self-loathing leftist Americans who take that passive-aggressive negative energy, amplify it, and reflect it back. I have Canadian relatives and whenever my smug, leftist American family members meet our smug leftist Canadian cousins, it becomes a self-reinforcing cyclone of hate on all things American, conservative or traditional and a love fest for the Canadian Liberal Party. Canadian conservatives are dismissed by both simply as low IQ lackeys of whoever the hated conservative American politician of the day is.

Yes, that is true. I’ve worked a few elections in the past. Did not feel like working the current one for many reasons including the fact that I am currently in the midst of trying to find another place to live in this utterly ridiculous real estate market.

But yes, Elections Canada and Elections Ontario still do quite a thorough job at checking voter IDs against Social Insurance Numbers (and other government-issued forms of photo ID).

I fully agree with your response. Mail-in voting allows the dishonest person to vote in two or more precincts or states on election day.

If every voter has to present an ID and the ID matches the name and address on the registration rolls, it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, for a person to vote twice or more.
