Question about the canine ivermectin. Why do vets require a blood test before giving a dog heart guard? and why is it given only during mosquito season?
I was told that if the dog has heartworms, the heartguard will damage the dog’s heart or kill the dog. Is this true?
If ivermectin prevents heart worm, why doesn’t it kill it?

It does kill the heart worm, but leaves holes in the heart where the worm was. Hence the blood test before initial treatment.
