WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand’s government took drastic action Tuesday by putting the entire nation into a strict lockdown for at least three days after finding a single case of coronavirus infection in the community.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern invoked some of the stirring rhetoric she used early in the pandemic by urging the “team of 5 million” — New Zealand’s population — to go hard and early in trying to eliminate the latest outbreak.
“We have seen what happens elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it,” Ardern said. “We only get one chance.”
She said Auckland, where the infected man lives, and Coromandel, where he had visited, would go into a full lockdown for seven days and the remainder of the country for three days while health experts tried to find the source of his infection.
The developments prompted people to line up outside supermarkets to stock up on essential items and sparked a sharp drop in the value of the New Zealand dollar.

Gonna be a beotch during cold and flu season.
Especially Australia and New Zealand.
They think they are on islands and don't know or accept that this ccp air borne produced virus will ever affect them.
IMO, Covid is never going away, just like the Cold and Flu Season we normally have, we will have Covid coming back in one form or another for a very long time, it’s hard to imagine a country like Australia and New Zealand locking down after 1-2 cases 5-10 years from now...
Eventually, it will reach it’s an intersecting point of being able to spread and surviving in a host, without killing the host.
That’s how viruses always work.
Lock down all you want ... but the virus doesn’t care. It’s coming and everyone is going to get it and its variants.

Australia has gone nuts. I don’t believe New Zealand has.
What will interesting to watch is when the reality that vaccines do not last and every 6-8 months you need a booster shot...when the vaccines first came out naturally there was huge rush by people to get vaccinated thinking it was like other vaccines, get a shot and never worry about it again, that is quickly disappearing....over time a small percentage of people will get booster shots make them more vulnerable to getting sick....
Either way, Covid in one form or the other is never going away IMO, learning to live with it or developing better treatments is what we will have to get use to...
Having been there (2018), I would say there is the Auckland-trend, and rest of the nation-trend. A lot of people beyond the city limits of Auckland are independently-minded, and depend a great deal on tourism to occur. Tax revenue is way down, and at some point....services will have to be curtailed.
Given that New Zealand has an unapologetically Maoist Prime Minister this shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Amazon was going to film a Lord of the Ring made for.TV series in NZ, and they just cancelled it and are filming in the wilder Northern parts of the UK instead.
The original LOTR movie was filmed in NZ, and it’s a very popular place for filming because it’s so beautiful and wild, but still has a good employee and service base for things the film crews need. Not anymore I guess.
This is going to cost NZ a lot. If companies can’t rely on the country to stay open, they’re just going to cross it off their list permanently.

One of the girls I know likes to tell me what an excellent leader Jacinda is, I tell her remind me in 5 years when New Zealand is still going thru shutdowns.
All part of the plan to subjugate the people. China will roll over New Zealand and Australia without ever firing a shot.
The better vaccines have proven to be effective.
A booster is not required if the vaccinated person was exposed to the virus. They will develop natural immunity as a result.
The vaccine is just to mitigate the most severe symptoms.
A virus never goes away. The Spanish Flu of 1918 is still among us. We have all been exposed and have developed antibodies against it.
This virus will be with us forever. New Zealand is stupid and will suffer when they open up travel to the rest of the world.
WTF is wrong with these supposed government officials? There needs to be a world uprising against these governments ... course we can’t even get that here. We should be having massive protest here against this tyranny.
