Abbott appeals for out-of-state help against Covid in Texas

Gov. Greg Abbott is appealing for out-of-state help to fight the third wave of Covid-19 in Texas.

The Monday appeal comes as a county-owned hospital in Houston raises tents to accommodate their Covid-19 overflow. Private hospitals in the county already were requiring their staff to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

...Abbott has directed the Texas Department of State Health Services to use staffing agencies to find additional medical staff from beyond the state’s borders as the delta wave began to overwhelm its present staffing resources. He also has sent a letter to the Texas Hospital Association to request that hospitals postpone all elective medical procedures voluntarily.

Hospital officials in Houston said last week that area hospitals with beds had insufficient numbers of nurses to serve them.

Abbott also directed the state health department and the Texas Division of Emergency Management to open additional Covid-19 antibody infusion centers to treat patients not needing hospital care and expand Covid-19 vaccine availability to the state’s underserved communities. He also announced that about $267 million in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program food benefits. That was on top of the $3.9 billion in benefits previously allocated since April 2020.

Meantime, one of Houston’s two county-owned hospitals was pitching tents to accommodate its Covid-19 overflow. Harris Health System and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in northeastern Houston added nearly 2,000 square feet of medical tents in the hope of taking control of the anticipated increase in patient volume and keep staff and non-Covi-19 patients safe.

I'll never forgive those supporting this illegal invasion of our country. Pretty much would cover most Demorats and the. people voting for them I figure.

It’s common practice to hire “traveling” nurses and go through staffing agencies.

D be surprised if the current uptick wasn’t caused by the illegals Biden is flooding the state with.

If that’s the case, then Abbott should state that’s the reason for the needed assistance. Give numbers (% of hospitalizations due to illegals). If he won’t do that, then he needs to be replaced.

Thanks a pant-load, slow Joe Xiden! If that bastard (or, more accurately, the people running the Executive Branch behind the scenes) hadn’t let in about 200,000 illegals per month for the last 7 months, and NOT checked them for Covid, then perhaps there wouldn’t be so much Covid all over this country (and particularly in border states like Texas).

It is amazing to me that people 100+ years ago, despite not having computers, air conditioning, smart phones, the internet, aircraft, nuclear power, space travel, etc., etc. understood that letting people who were sick into the country was not good, and they took steps to minimize it because they cared about the health of the people of this country more than the desires of non-Americans to come to our shores RIGHT NOW. So they either kept them in quarantine until they clearly couldn’t spread disease or, in some cases, simply sent them back to their country of origin.

We, meanwhile, have all of those nice toys mentioned above, and we arrogantly think that we’re MUCH smarter than those primitive rubes from 3-4 generations ago, yet we’re making a mistake that a 5-year-old of that era would have told you is stupid.

Monoclonal antibodies need to be taken fairly early on. If one is in a bad way, they are NOT indicated.

One hospital in Houston fired over 200 employees because they refuse to get vaccinated. Gee what a surprise that there is suddenly a staffing problem.

In December 2020, Harris County and Houston had 42,000 active cases, which are people hospitalized with COVID, and there were no tents. The 42,000 number was the peak for Harris County and Houston. Today, the active cases in Harris County and Houston are only 29,452 active cases. I call BS on there is no room in the hospitals and they need tents.

One note, the death rate is flat and the majority of active cases are surviving.

AND - how many of these hospitals have just announced that they are REQUIRING all employees to be vaxxed?

I truly believe a labor (nursing/med tech) shortage is the cause of needing outside help!

Maybe they should re-think this! Actually, Abbott should include ALL employees and not just government employees cannot be forced to take the jab?

But Abbott has given the green light to fire heroic nurses who don’t get vaccinated. Makes sense.

Read the article closely: ANTICIPATED. Houston added nearly 2,000 square feet of medical tents in the hope of taking control of the anticipated increase in patient volume and keep staff and non-Covi-19 patients safe.

2,000 sq ft of tent?

That's 40'x 50'.
