Canadian marijuana manufacturers are sitting on 1.1 billion grams (2.4 million pounds) of the drug that they can't sell as the country's legalized weed industry runs out of puff.
Last October, Canadian cannabis firms had around 1.1 billion grams of harvested or processed cannabis sitting in storage. Around 95 per cent of that weed is considered ‘largely unsaleable’ because it has been spoiled by time, and because there's just too much existing supply to try and sell it.
The low quality of the products as well as the slow process by which the provinces allowed for licensed stores to sell the cannabis in the years since legalization is being blamed for the destroyed stockpiles.

Big ‘DUH’. Legalization was always about appeasing the left.
“because there’s just too much existing supply to try and sell it.”
I grew up in Vancouver, the mecca of weed in Kanaduh. Knew about 7 dudes who turned their basements into a weed garden back in the 90’s, and they always got caught by the cops because they couldnt figure out to disguise the smell at the ventilation end. ALWAYS bragged they were better than the Americans and will legalize weed before the US did. Guess that was wrong too XD
A former coworker of mine got a job as head security of a marijuana grow up and it was great in the beginning, because he nearly got unlimited hours.
The grow up flopped and he had to go back to his old job.
It was a no brainer to predict that government pot would be too expensive and low quality. CA and CO legalized pot industry is in the same condition. Black markets are a true expression of capitalism.
It is called weed for a reason. It is easy to cultivate, grow, and harvest. Government weed is stupid.
Won't Hussein have another birthday in about a year?
Rd later.
You can not create a free market through central economic planning.
Is low quality just a function of poor seed choice or due to sub optimal Sun that far north?
I doubt there was anything “wrong” with it quality wise, it’s just no longer fresh. They grow with artificial lights, to force hybrids. It’s like certain spices in your kitchen pantry, they lose all or most of the flavors I expect, and eventually it might as well be sawdust. All that high dollar bud turns to “unsaleable”, or at least not the price they were planning on getting. Oops.
They taxed themselves out of business. Nobody could have predicted this. Who could have known?
Government weed isn’t stupid.
It’s evil.
You would think they’d vacuum seal the product to avoid that.
Exactly. What the people want and what government wants is almost always in contrast with each other. I think to the average pot smoker, they want to plant a seed, grow a plant, and smoke it without the fear of going to prison. But of course big business and big government sees the individual as a dollar sign, a number, a problem, or a combination of the three.
There go the potential profits, up in smoke!
The indigenous population took over the retail sales market... And they don’t pay taxes. Add to that, every Canadian household can legally grow up to 4 plants... And Just not Ready Trudeau’s dream of making millions from pot ‘went up in smoke!’.
I checked out a pot dispensary when I drove through Colorado recently. You could buy 28% thc ounces for $120 out the door. When I smoked pot 30 years ago I was paying more for a much lower quality illegal product. I don’t see how illegal dealers can beat that price point. If you’re growing your own in Canada, how many plants represent 30 grams a day? Are people actually prescribed 30 grams a day?
Leave it to the Canucks. With legalization, the pot market is changing. Respond to it or go broke.
Is there anything a government CAN’T screw up?
