Simone Biles, the superstar gymnast from the U.S., will not participate in the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Games and will instead focus on her mental well-being, USA Gymnastics said in a statement early Wednesday.
The decision comes a day after she pulled out of the team all-around competition.
Jade Carey, who finished ninth in qualifying, will take Biles’ place in the individual all-around competition.
"After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games," USA Gymnastics said in a statement posted on Twitter Wednesday night. "We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."
The statement said Biles will be evaluated daily to see if she can "participate in next week’s individual event finals."

Gee you are all heart. Give the young girl a break.
Now that Simone has set the precedent, will we now start to see professional atheletes (i.e. NFL, NBA, MLB) walk off of the field/court because of mental injuries?
Why are so many here so quick to criticize this gymnast?
…….because we don’t applaud quitters. In golf, isn’t her problem called the ‘Yips’ ? Can’t shake that off.
So the new addition to “crazy world” is that quitters are “brave.”
“It’s time to tell it like it is, sports fans. Is the modern-day athlete a pale imitation of the great old warriors?”
Yeah, Obama: You didn’t win that medal, Queen B and other sisters in the Shtruggle made it possible for you to succeed...
You are today’s de facto expert, because you watched.
Woke fail.
Talking heads on Fox falling all over themselves praising her move and promoting mental health. Right. Her mental health will go south once she wakes up and realizes her lifetime legacy of quitting on her team and country.
“Her risk of permanent injury isn’t worth the aggravation she is getting. I wish her every future success in her life.”
I’m not unsympathetic to the pressure on Biles, but most of these female gymnasts are playing thru some kind of nagging injury. There’s no such thing (yet) as a professional gymnastic league. Finally, Biles’ age would argue that this is her last Olympics. Give it everything you have and leave it all on the mat.
Shane Falco (from the movie “The Replacements”): Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.
Let’s see. Four time (Olympics) GOLD Olympic champion. THE Face of women’s gymnastics. Has, what, four routines/difficulties named after her in multiple disciplines. GOAT has been thrown around so much that team USA even brought out an actual goat!
No, no pressure there.
Im 6’ tall. Biles could leap over me without even thinking about it.
Monday morning quarterbacking is all very well and good with a sport we’ve all played at some level in our lives. But I couldn’t even do what Simone does on my best day in my prime! Hell, I wouldn’t even attempt it.
Nope. I’m not going to try and second guess her decision. At some point you gotta take a time out and take care of you. The women grew up in that spotlight with that pressure.
The fact that it happened now is unfortunate and that’s all it is.
Why are so many here so quick to criticize this gymnast?

I’m guessing you didn’t see her television commercial with the trans man in a unitard talking about performing oral sex on Simone?
Maybe she thought the alternate could do a better job than she could. The team still got the silver.
The One World Olympics is well past its prime. Just end them, the world games work just fine for anyone still interested in this facade.
Agree. She flat out said she wanted this Olympics to be about herself. Quitting the team event lets it’s be about her. Now she can bask in praise. Some of which is racially tinged: “Look at what a strong Black woman she is”, blah, blah, blah.
I have no doubt she will recover her faculties for the _individual_ events.
a. Four years? How about a lifetime?
b. Gymnastics is a judged event. Think about it.
c. Her team supports her; they understand, you do not.
BRAVO!
The pressures these kids suffer over their lifetimes is something that the critics can’t understand.
No, she quit and gave her team a better chance to medal. She wasn’t performing her best and she knew it. Had she tried to muscle through it, they might not have even got the bronze.
Ultimately, even her amazing talent could not keep up with her ego. She was no longer merely trying to do her best mentally — she was trying to be the greatest of all time.
If you are just doing your best you expect to have off days and make mistakes. When you are the greatest of all time, you can’t make a mistake and every failure gets magnified and becomes an obstacle that can’t be overcome. Her ego subjected herself to a standard no one can ever meet and she snapped.
