A man sentenced to death in the US state of California for murdering a 12-year-old girl and four other women has died of natural causes, officials say.

Rodney Alcala, 77, died at a hospital near California's Corcoran state prison in the early hours of Saturday.

Alcala, who was known as the "Dating Game Killer" after taking part in a US TV show, was convicted in 2010.

As well as the California killings, he had also pleaded guilty to the murders of two other women in New York.

Rodney used to stay in LA’s creepy infamous Hotel Cecil. After his escapades, he’d walk through the lobby and go to his room. No one seemed to notice - or care - that he was bloody.

Anyone know when Kalifornia last executed someone? Would 1982 be a good guess?

Looks like 2006

I met him with my friend Linda, years ago on Long Island. 1971 I think. Cannot remember where but it seems it might’ve been in a park. I remember him tall and long hair, kind of attractive although I always felt afraid of him. He seemed to ‘grown up’ and because my friend was taken with him I did not want to leave her alone with him. She was the pretty one and he spoke to her of his photography, said his name was John. Was taking photography at NYU with Roman Polanski. We were impressed.

He wanted to take us to the beach (Fire Island) and we went with him in his car. I’ll never forget that drive, he was so talkative back on land but once in the car did not speak at all. The back of his car was loaded with camera gear. Expensive stuff too. It was April and we were so young we did not put it together the beach would be pretty empty, and it was. One man and his two little daughters there, far from where he led us to sit on a blanket on the sand. Quite far down the beach to a pretty deserted spot by the tall grasses.

He immediately sent me of for a cup of coffee for him at the snack bar, giving me a dollar or two. It took me a long time to walk across the soft deep beach sand to the snack bar, and I really did trudge reluctantly because I was tired. It was about the equivalent of 3 blocks away from were we were on the sand. Of course, it was closed. I trekked back.

While I was gone he asked my friend to pose for his camera in front of the waves, she was flattered and did. After a bit asked her to remove her blouse and pants and pose in her bra and panties, which she foolishly did (she told me later). When I got back they were on the blanket and she looked pale with fear. She asked me to accompany her to the bathroom (back at that same very far away snack bar) and she took my hand and literally started running. I knew something was up. I had no idea what, and really did not know the entire thing till just a couple of years ago.

Only one person left in the parking lot just pulling out and we begged him for a ride back and he gave us a ride back and let us off at the end of the bridge on the Island side. We hastened away from there fearing his return. I don’t remember if we walked or how it went at this point but I do remember we were afraid he’d come driving over the bridge and spot us and we were getting the heck out of there.

She told me years later he jumped on her on the blanket and got very worked up, moving about on her and shortly acted as if he had an orgasm, although he was fully clothed. She was a virgin at the time, was trying to push him off and felt it was bizarre behavior, of course was terrified.

Stupid move by us by todays standards, stupid even back then and very obviously a bad move but back then things really were quieter, safer, and of course we were very young and we did not ever guess we could both disappear forever.

Both your friend and you had a narrow escape.
If he had harmed your friend, you would have been at least a partial witness to his whereabouts on that day.
He knew what he was doing to send you to that far away snack bar. The question will always remain, how many other girls did he bring to that beach and complete his ‘routine’ with to his demented satisfaction? Your Guardian Angel was watching for both you gals on that day.

The older Rodney A. became, the more he resembled
Phil Spector during Phil’s years of incarceration.
Both men had an affinity for sporting very curly or very teased up frizzy hair.

Yes. We talked this over and I don’t know what his plan was but I think it was to wait for the other man and his girls to leave the beach. We could not probably outrun him and Fire Island is very isolated when no one is there. No lights on the beach and he was tall and able to outrun us I’m sure. First one then the other. I think that is why he was so quiet on the drive over. Thinking of the way to do it or something. He had a kind of way of talking to us that made me feel like we were not his equal. Not quite arrogant but...something.

Linda told me later do you remember...it’s funny but I never did forget him though it was a long time ago.

You know, you could probably write that up and sell it to a script-writer, if they wind up doing a movie about the late, not-so-lamented Mr. Alcala.

Interesting idea. Problem is, I know no script writer ;) But if I ever do...

I do know my friend wanted to talk to him in prison, to see if he remembered her, if he would talk to her about it. I’m sure he wasn’t going to talk, and thankfully she does not live near his prison. But she never has seen her own photographs he took of her and I think she fears seeing them someday pop up in the paper or online.

I understand that down there they consider that appetizers.

I suggest you write it up anyway, and keep it handy. I really *do* think you could sell it if ever given the opportunity. I feel strongly enough about that I feel confident enough to throw the Good Housekeeping Genuine Useful Advice Seal-of-Approval on it. Complete with the satisfaction guarantee that if I’m wrong and I’ve caused you to waste some of your time, you have every right to say that I will owe you restitution for those XX value of minutes wasted calculated by the current minimum wage law in your particular state.” :P
