The 2nd Amendment was directed at England
In 1682 laws were passed in Virginia prohibiting indentured from owning firearms. At this time, 96% of all labor was accomplished by indentured which comprised between 2/3rds and 3/4ths of all colonists, 60% dying within 2 years, well before completing their indentured terms. There were less than 100,000 slaves brought to America prior to 1776. At any given time 20-30% of all blacks were freemen.
The indentured servant rebellions of 1663, 1676, 1687 and the rebellions of 1712, 1739 and 1741 (and some 300 other individual brutal attacks against farmers) all contributed to laws prohibiting indentured servants from owning weapons, and moved the 1705 Virginia General Assembly to change indentured status to that of ‘slave’. This was not racism but caste warfare - absent owners refusing to allocate land to freed indentured, towns refusing to accept the owner’s responsibility, indentured rebelling against lack of protection from indians in land that indentured were forced on to - the outskirts and wilderness. Add in Africans, born as slaves and sold as slaves in their own land, with a history of untold centuries of kidnapping, enslaving and slaughtering enemies as a lifestyle, and it was a hot mess in the colonies.
In 1775 the Virginia Governor declared that any slaves that fought for England would be freed, conscripted and armed. About half of the existing 100,000 slaves at the time took him up on that offer (with 20,000 leaving in defeat with the British after the war).
The act of the Virginia Governor (Lord Dunmore), along with the announcement from England that any enemy of colonialists was a friend of Engand and British efforts to recruit and arm blacks, Tories and indians, led to a proclamation that all patriots needed to carry weapons and all had a right to protect their nation and their homes from all invaders, foreign and domestic.
