For the first time ever, California posted a population decline in 2020, and the United States as a whole didn’t fare much better. Its growth has decelerated to 0.35% year-over-year, the slowest growth rate since the Great Depression.
Population experts blame the slowing growth rate on three big trends: families across the country are aging and having fewer kids, legal immigration has declined, and economic hardships extending all the way back to the dot-com crash have shifted priorities away from marriage and families. While some contributing factors are down across the board, other social and economic factors have disproportionately impacted specific counties and states, exacerbating the problems for certain areas.

Why tho?
If not for foreign immigration, even the great state of Virginia would be losing population.
“... families across the country are aging and having fewer kids, legal immigration has declined, and economic hardships...”
That’s a start per the article. The others are economic opportunity (West Virginia) lawlessness, drugs, policies and taxation.
If you want to increase birth rates then stop killing the unborn.
Note the overall decline after 1973 Roe v. Wade.

How could the population experts have missed RACISM?
NOBODY wants to live in such a racist country. Absolutely nobody.
Hence the border invasion orchestrated by the party of Davos and the Globalists.
The Chicago area counties seem to see 10-20 people murdered every weekend, so that would be a loss of approximately 500-1000 people per year, plus the children the murdered are no longer having in the case of younger adults, plus the people who are moving to other cities because of all the crime and murder in Chicago.
Time to start releasing buffalo and let the state go back natural. The local indian tribes probably don’t want any part of it.
3 of the 6 counties that used to define the Chicago metro area are on the list; Cook and DuPage among large counties, and Lake as a mid-size county. That leaves Will, Kane and McHenry not on any of the lists in the article.
Take a wild guess
I know few on this site will believe this, but there are a whole host of Americans having plenty of children, but it is under the radar and not officially counted. There are so many conservative Christian, Catholic and other groups who are having huge families.
I just wish it was enough to counter the illegal alien growth.
#1) Queens
#2) Brooklyn (dba “Kings County”)
#4) The Bronx
#8) Manhattan (dba “New York County”)
Four of the top eight are boroughs of New York City. Hell of a job, there, Warren Wilhelm. I grew up in Queens, and have three siblings living there. The place has only gotten much, much worse in the almost fifty years since I left.
Rural communities are vacating. Who is buying up the farmland, business and residential properties?
Open the borders!
Fifteen years ago, I could count the cars passed on the way to town on one hand. Today, I run out of fingers and toes just getting to the main road.
The cancer is metastasizing to other healthy organs (states.)
I wish we could just use nuclear-grade radiation on it.
Counties with the greatest population loss seem to have demonstrated the greatest gain in votes for Biden in 2020, compared to Hillary (in 2016).
My family just auctioned our last 275 acres of prime Illinois farm land. A corporation bought it to lease out.
So, your host of Americans are not getting birth certificates for their children? Because that is where the stats come from. We both know that isn’t happening, but if it were, Lord help those poor kids when they want to go to school or get a job.
