Toyota halting contributions to U.S. lawmakers who opposed Biden certification

WASHINGTON, July 8 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp's (7203.T) political action committee will halt donations to U.S. members of Congress who voted against President Joe Biden's election certification in January, the company said on Thursday.

The largest Japanese automaker has faced harsh criticism for donations to some lawmakers - members of then-President Donald Trump's Republican Party - who voted against certification of Biden's win in some U.S. states.

"We are actively listening to our stakeholders and, at this time, have decided to stop contributing to those members of Congress who contested the certification of certain states in the 2020 election," the company said.

More than 535 people have been arrested and charged with joining a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in an unsuccessful attempt to stop Congress from certifying Biden's election victory over Trump.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) reported on June 23 that Toyota made $56,000 in total donations to 38 of the 147 Republican lawmakers who voted against Biden's electoral certification and said it was the most any company directly contributed to lawmakers who opposed certification.

That disclosure and subsequent media coverage prompted a frenzy of criticism of Toyota, which had earlier defended the donations.

The Lincoln Project, a group largely of Republicans that are critical of Trump, on Thursday posted an ad calling out Toyota's donations to those Republicans.

A Toyota spokesman did not say how long the contribution halt will last. The company noted its political action committee equally supports Republicans and Democrats and added the company "has long-standing relationships with Members of Congress across the political spectrum, especially those representing our U.S. operations."

I thought that Toyota was competent, but they lack discernment.

Toyota should NOT be afraid to tell the truth. Instead they are denying the truth and punishing those who do tell the truth.

They should know better. They probably do know better but are cowards.

I hope that Toyota plans to triple their donations to those they denied because Toyota is pretending that Biden's certification was legitimate.

Let me suggest that Freepers tell Toyota what they think about Toyota's political action committee: Here's the webform page that you can use to contact Toyota:

I'm a current Toyota owner. I let Toyota know that they've lost my future business because like millions of Americans, I believe Biden and the democrats stole the 2020 election.

You seem to think our spineless rhinos would punish the woke companies. You do realize the left and majority of the right are one and the same right? Our country is swirling the drain and they’re all for it. Only one way out and we don’t have any real organization nor the stones to actually do a typing but complain on social media.

I have a Tahoe and a Dodge ram that both have around 250k miles on them and run great with no major work on either one so far. I will keep driving both until the wheels fall off.

Notice they said “stakeholders” and not “shareholders”. “Stakeholders” can include customers and shareholders, but can also include left wing NGOs, activist groups, twitter mobs, academics, market research groups, and other groups.

No. I think RINOs will take big losses in the Republican primaries in 2022 and again in 2024. I think the remaining RINOs will be scared and will toe the line as a result.

Coca-Cola will have its second quarter 2021 earnings call on July 21st. Many conservatives, including President Trump, called for a boycott due to its "be less white" HR training and its opposition to voting reform in Georgia, where it has corporate headquarters. If domestic sales do not suffer the way Gillette did a few years ago with its "toxic masculinity" commercial, then corporate America will come to the conclusion it has nothing to fear from conservative backlash to their leftist agenda. The same will hold true with Toyota.

In my own case, I stopped using Chewy for dog food a few months ago due to their decision not to fund politicians who questioned the 2020 election. Later, I stopped using Pet Smart because they had a pro-pervert page on their retail website. I told both firms the reason I stopped buying from them.

Governor Abbott, the third RINO governor in a row in Texas, is running scared. After the statewide mask mandate and shutting of "nonessential" businesses, followed by the statewide power shutdown in February, Abbott has turned significantly rightward in the last couple of months.

*** There was an article here about dealers wanting to buy back vehicles and pay more than the original price because used cars are doing better than the soaring prices of new cars. Cars were within 2-3 yrs old.

Corporations shouldn’t be allowed to contribute to politicians, period.

Pay to play, it's all rigged.

Toyota and Hyundai make excellent cars and have horrible political signaling. Why not just sell cars and have a Bible on the coffee table in the waiting room?
