There was a HUGE abolitionist movement during the Colonial period and there were extensive debates about slavery during the Constitutional Convention. It came down to a necessary compromise to create the new Republic or let each state go its own way. If the states had all gone their own independent ways and the Constitution not ratified, Waters might be a slave today on a Southern plantation.
