Ostensibly it marked the end of slavery in the defeated Confederacy and more specifically somewhere in Texas.
The victorious Union clung to slavery longer.

We had Lincoln’s birthday, but I guess that’s too White for the Maoists.
I worked with decent people who were able to slowly do their work. They weren't uptight about what I got done, so there wasn't animus going either direction.
I just enjoyed doing more work.
In the last year or so a statue of Lincoln with a freed slave at his feet was hauled down because - it was alleged - it perpetuated an offensive stereotype.
How long before the holiday celebrants realize “Juneteenth” was intended to perpetuate the notion that a certain population did not have the capacity to count to 19?

Yesterday someone shot 8 people in a home there after an argument. Four are dead, and the other four critical. No details yet on the suspect. Business as usual.
A holiday about slavery seems insulting to intelligent black people who have lives. It segregates society.
It became "National" when Trump had a rally on it, and the media made a big deal out of it, even though nobody outside of Texas even knew what Juneteenth was.
That is stupid.

Slavery was not done away with in the Northern Slave States that had remained in the Union, till Dec of 1865.
I believe 11 (now). There’s 12 every four years as Inauguration Day is a (paid) federal holiday.
