CNN) The Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
The legislation has gained momentum since the massive Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd last year and the Democrats' takeover of the White House and Congress.

It is already a holiday in Texas, as is appropriate for a historical event in Texas.
Only because Trump was supposed to have a rally on that day, and somebody came up with the idea that “how dare Trump have a rally on Juneteenth”, even though the vast majority of the country had no idea of what Juneteenth even was.
The only people that benefit from these ‘crap’ holidays are: Federal and state employees and banks. The rest of us smucks have to keep working
Its a holiday because a bunch of blacks and antia burnt down the country over the summer. It’s not woth celebrating and probably in a few years no one will ever mention it again anyway.

The House passes it as well, Biden signs it, and it's a new federal holiday. Which means Congress will take a week or two around June 19th off starting next year.
When will the Senate propose an old white dude day for the dudes who built this country?

I'm in Charlie "parker" land and this is the first year this 'holdiay' is in effect. The only reason I know is because I went to the bank yesterday and there was a HUGE sign saying the bank is closed Saturday for Juneteenth day. SMH.

This is disgusting. No mention of the men who sacrificed to free the slaves. No mention of the families torn apart by the war. Pathetic!
