He would also wax poetic on the effects of army peanut butter and jelly on his digestive system. IIRC one made his bowels flow while the other stopped him up.
He was eloquent in a Pattonesque way at such times.

When I was in the infantry in '75 and going on field exercises, I remember eating every "Lifer Bar" that I could find in the C-rations; they were the chocolate covered cookie-looking "desserts" in certain C-rations. They completely stopped my digestive system from working during the FTX. To get it running again at the end of the FTX, I would eat all of the saved "John Wayne Bars"; they were the chocolate/peanut candy bars. They could unblock everything in my system and I'd spend the first few hours after an FTX in the latrine losing several pounds ...

He should have followed MacArthur’s advice and used atomic weapons on the chicom ports and supply depots...

I was a 8 weeks from graduating from HS when harry caved to the communists running the State Department (April 1951)...
I was already committed to arriving at Parris Island 3 weeks after graduation...

The next two years were the most costly part of the war for the U.S. and while Harry did good in 1945, he is responsible for 30-40 thousand American deaths in 51,52,& 53...

This act also makes him responsible for the Asian communist giant being able to invade and control a large part of our economy and political system today, IMHO...

I guess you guys had two enemies to worry about. The VC/NVA and the food.

Well, I would have designed those weapons to seek ‘Taliban’ only.

Hey, if I can think that up in 10 seconds, someone has developed it already.

Let them deploy them.

It would turn out like that ‘Suicide Bomber’ cartoon.

I wouldn’t dispute the NVA were invaders; the problem for the Saigon government was that they weren’t defeating the Viet Cong (South Vietnamese communists).

I also wouldn’t dispute that those Americans who actually embraced the communists (like Hanoi Jane) were traitors; I don’t lump those generally opposed to the war (not wanting to send young Americans to fight there) are in the same category.

As I remember, the VC were made up of two categories: the local VC and the Main Force or Hard Corps VC. The locals were just farmers, fishermen, merchants - lightly trained, indifferently motivated, poorly armed. They'd surrender easily if trapped - and they were the largest portion of the enemy. The Hard Corps VC were the best trained, highly skilled in night attacks, ambushes, mortar employment - and politically fanatic. In numbers, the ARVN could handle them but nobody were more committed than they were and they were vicious: you di not want to be taken prisoner (if they were taking prisoners) by the Hard Corps VC.

The NVA ("Hard Hats") had modern equipment, excellent training and heavy weaponry, like 120mm mortars, 122mm artillery/rockets and occasionally, tanks. You never ran into platoons of NVA - just battalions. If you thought you were taking on a platoon, you were wrong. By the time we (the US) were landing in Danang, the NVA had two divisions at minimum in South Vietnam - but of course, nobody outside of Vietnam knew that, since the press was telling everyone that the northerners weren't there.

They should have asked us.

I do understand that there was a major faction of the "antiwar" movement that were simply against losing their lives or the lives of their loved ones in that war - but they were mistaken. The pro-enemy faction controlled the narrative and overall the movements ended up helping the enemy and hindering us.

One part was "accidental" treason and the other very direct and intentional treason - and that last part rose to control our country now.

Thanks for the descriptions!

Yes, the worst of them are running the country now; they learned a lot from Ho Chi Minh about how to suppress people.
