The mask stays on because they feel naked if they are not wearing it.
Another taboo, much like the wearing of a hat or head covering of some kind has been the custom in many lands and in many cultures. It’s a heard thing. And a herd thing.

Before COVID, there were a large group of Asians, especially in Japan and China, who started wearing masks for air quality reasons but it grew into a small subculture. They wore them also for privacy issues, beautification, a different look, sports teams, etc.
I actually pre-purchased a number of masks from Japan just as the COVID thing started, which my family used.
I have no doubt some will continue to wear a mask, not just for the virus risk.
