The Chicago Police Department's anti-looting task force ended Monday night and the department have released new numbers pointing to fewer murders and shootings last month compared to the previous year.
The traditional summer kickoff has historically been a problematic one in Chicago and this one was no exception. At least 32 people were shot, three of them fatally since Friday night.
And yet, according to CPD, this has been Chicago's least violent Memorial Day weekend in years.
Despite an increase in the overall number of shootings, in new numbers just released for the entire month of May, CPD reports decreases in both the number of shooting victims and murders when compared to that same month last year. Here are the numbers:
-In May 2021 there were 65 murders in Chicago. That is compared to last year when there were 84.
-In May of 2021 392 people were victims of gun violence in the city. That is compared to 398 last year.

I don’t know about Chicago, but the temperature has been cool here in the Northeast. I’m sure as soon as the temperature starts to rise, so will the amount of homicides in Chicago.

Every month has had dramatic increases month over month in murders and aggravated assault, and from the same month the previous year. However, in November, we had two less than the previous November, so our work is done here and we want to end the task force.
BOARD MEMBER: Ahh...what have the statistics been like for December, January, February, March, and April?
POLICE CHIEF: Well, uhh, it, uh, takes a while to, er, tabulate the figures and, uh, get someone to subtract the two numbers...
BOARD MEMBER: So, you consider the job done because we had one month that had two fewer murders and aggravated assaults, and wish to end the task force?
POLICE CHIEF: Yes, er, but...but November was encouraging, we we all know how important it is to make people think that, uh, with the new Administration in Washington, that, uh...well...things are uh, getting back to normal.
BOARD MEMBER: Okay. Approved.
The numbers will pick up shortly. Milwaukee is anecdotally seeing a 200% increase in violent crime over the last three years. With all the illegals flooding the region it will become a target rich environment.
Because when you control statistics, you control the truth.
