In the latest of Joe Biden’s history of blunders around the Armed Forces, the American President became verbally abusive when the Coast Guard graduating class refused to clap in response to what seems to have been a back handed insult. After complaining about the lack of applause, laughter ensued, and a few graduates gave a belated round of applause.
“I can only assume that you’ll enjoy educating your family about how the Coast Guard is, quote, the hard nucleus around the navy forms in times of war,” said Biden, laughing at the beginning. It is unclear whether Biden was insulting the popular reputation of the Coast Guard as an unimportant part of the U.S. Armed Forces, despite the fact that – with a shoestring budget – the Coast Guard completes dangerous work in the Caribbean and is responsible for apprehending more illegally smuggled cocaine than any law enforcement branch in the country.
“Wow, you’re a really dull class,” Biden then yelled. “I mean come on man, is the sun getting to you? I would think you’d have an opportunity when I say that about the Navy to clap, but we came here together.” At this point some members of the Coast Guard graduating class began laughing, then prompting a belated round of applause.

My BIL was Coast Guard, he called them Hooligans Navy.
He called them that while the CG was doing a safety inspection on my boat. They failed to see the humor.
I think some admiral “liked” him and stole him. Even if he had been inducted into the Navy, he was probably doomed to be a navigator. His personality may have made him shun command, but command is a skill that can be developed. Even commanding a small detachment of channel marker maintainers prepares you for bigger things. Sweating over charts just makes you a technician. He was good technician.
Personally, I think all SAR units in any branch are real heroes.
My wife asked me the other day why AF has so many stripes on their arms. They include the first recruit stripe to apprentice to Airman and on from there, when none of the other branches do. My Navy would give you three slashes in the same enlisted system on the sleeve starting with Seaman recruit, then Seaman Apprentice, then Seaman until you made Petty Officer third class with one chevron and the crow. Not sure how Army and Marines work theirs since "specialties" have a different system. Correct my if I'm wrong.
I don't get the joke.
I still don't get the joke. 11 years active Aviation Navy (75-86). But then, the flight deck probably kept me too busy to be concerned about the other branches' inside jokes.
I don’t know how it is now. During the Vietnam era, I always thought the Army was the easiest place to make rank, we had two year service draftees who were E-6’s. The Marines being in second place. You could do four years in the AF and still be an E-4, in fact that was typical. If I had extended for 12 months after my two, I could have made E-5, I had way more than enough points and I am pretty sure my CO would have recommended me.
To brag: I was meritoriously advanced from E-4 to E-5 on a ship of 600 without all the studying and tests. I even have a letter from the Captain congratulating me. And no, I wasn't a suck up to my division CPO or Department Head who both put me in for the advancement. I just did my job on the flight deck.
I was surprised at a ship's morning muster when the Captain called me forward after assigning ribbons/medals on others. I kept thinking what did I do wrong? Am I going to Captain's Mast? Instead, he handed me my E-5 crow and shook my hand and thanked me. Best Captain ever. The ship was always in tiptop shape and battle ready. It won many Battle Efficiency Awards. You can see the big yellow E on those ships.
He also signed a personal message on a photo of the ship saying, "Your Meritorious Advancement and now your Re-enlistment. I hope I'm around when you make CPO". That photo hangs with my other Navy stuff to this day. Still wish I had stayed to make CPO (did make E-6 before final discharge), but my rating was closing up and had a lucrative offer from a civilian company. Ok, end brag. Sorry to bore you.
The above said, my greatest respect goes to Marine and Army grunts who are more in harms way than my Cold War encounters with Soviet subs.
Thank you for your meritorious service!
It was a privilege to serve my Country.
