A former Texas state senator announced Monday he will challenge Gov. Greg Abbott for the Republican nomination for governor in 2022.
Former Republican Sen. Don Huffines launched his campaign via Twitter Monday morning. He is trying to challenge Abbott from the right. On his website, Huffines calls himself “an actual Republican” and says he will prioritize completion of the southern border wall, pass election laws and eliminate property taxes.

Our “leaders” are LOSERS!
They had two “justifications:”
1. The Biden EPA agreed to waive pollution controls for generators brought online that weren’t able to operate at optimal pollution levels (most need to be 100% to be most efficient or not be cycled on/off, getting cold all over again). The price needed for that waiver was $1.50/KWH (not the max $9.00).
2. The PUC idiots thought the market wasn’t showing a high enough Real Time price because half of Texas had no power and generators were offering electricity for less (because transmission providers were not allowing through the extra electricity), so energy was being generated and had no place to go, bringing down the actual Real Time price. One transmission company (Oncor) said their own circuits were not functioning right to deliver available electricity.
Indeed! All 5he money schools have to spend to accommodate illegals, and our kids aren’t even getting the education we’re paying for.
Sounds good. I’ll look into this guy. It would be nice to have an actual conservative as governor of Texas
We are forced to fight our property taxes every damn year, year after year.
I hired an outfit to do it for me now. When fighting it myself, I spent valuable hours through a week putting together a research packet “worthy” of the taxing @$$e$ in my county to have it shoved aside and disregarded. The whole process was a joke. Spent hours down at the tax office on my protest day. Spoke with a low level appraiser in his cube, showed my research packet in an effort to get the valuation pulled down a lil and save on taxes. NOPE!
So then, back to the waiting room with a hundred other poor souls to wait for the appraiser (god like figures) to call my name and I could present my case. All the while, some chump sitting at the table next to me acting like the “prosecutor” to convince the appraisers (god like figures) literally sitting up on an elevated panel desks with microphones looking down on the lowly taxpayer groveling to lower his taxes.
What a circus. I said never again. I hired an outfit to fight my taxes.
For two decades conservatives have been fighting to do something about this absurd taxing structure. Taxing folks out of their homes in many cases. Very lil movement and it looks like this legislative session is no different.
It's embarrassing in a supposed conservative state like Texas.
I have heard the secret on getting the county assessors to reduce the amount is:
1. Get five house sales in your immediate neighborhood that sold for less than the sq. footage of your currently priced home.
2. Show up with that and any other photographed damage you can find around your property in only the first week of the tax protest month.
A woman was flying in first class and while speaking to the man seated next to her realized that he was a real live rich Texan. She asked the Texan what his business was and he told her ranching.
The woman was intrigued and asked the Texan him how many cattle he had to which he said none. Baffled, she asked how much land he owned and he told her 5 acres. Completely suspicious that the Texan was messing with her she asked where his ranch was. He told her downtown Dallas.
That rich Texan may not be paying income taxes but he pays a boat load of property tax.
Last thing…. If a politician wants to spear head radical change in Texas, the focus needs to be on the Lt. Governor. The governor is an administrator with the limited authority to move discretionary funds around and a bully pulpit . The Lt. Gov controls the legislative agenda.
It’s still one of those things that would likely trip up any governor. A 1000 year freeze...really, what was Abbott supposed to do - investigate whether they could handle it? I’m sure we couldn’t before Abbott took office too, and if it had been DeSantis, would he have thought of investigating whether the system could handle a 1000 year freeze? To me, that doesn’t make him a RINO.
For the pricing part, well maybe, for sticking his nose in the market place, but he was pretty damn pissed because the people around him, including many career people, were telling him “don’t worry, we got this, we can handle cold weather”. So he still gets my vote!
Huffines is a big, old-money Texas insider surname. I’m suspicious.
I got a mailer from a group called "Texas Tax Protest". I've been thinking of trying it out to see if I can save some ca$h. Is this the same group? If not, I'm hoping someone here might have some experience with them.
I believe it’s his brother than owns the car dealership.
Thanks.
Not concerned either way. It is just good to know.
He could have ordered the state police and national guard to clear the streets and stop the blocking of traffic and the brandishing of firearms at citizens. He did nothing...
Been there, got the tee shirt. In the board appraisal, there was an itch-bay that would not even look me in the eye, the entire time. I would look directy at her and speak directly to her after she would make a comment or ask a question. She would not look up from her computer. I did get a good chunk knocked off my appraisals at that time but it was about 15 or 20 years ago.
To give credit where credit is due, Senator Bettancourt, Lt. Dan and others have been working for about 15 years to get this robbery fixed and are making actual progress. Listen to the Three Amigos podcasts on KSEV radio to get the latest. There was a 7 cent per hundred reduction in school taxes they talked about last Friday and some other good work.
“He could have ordered the state police and national guard to clear the streets and stop the blocking of traffic and the brandishing of firearms at citizens. He did nothing...”
Assuming that he even knew about it in time. As it is, I don’t see him lying about the Democrat Brownshirts, like others RINOs do.
Bettencourt associates are pretty good.
>>To give credit where credit is due, Senator Bettancourt, Lt. Dan and others have been working for about 15 years to get this robbery fixed<<
Yes, they’ve been like hound dogs on an escaped prisoner from TDC. We’ve just had RINO Texas house speakers that have worked overtime to derail these guys.
"Been there, got the tee shirt."
You guys must live in Comal county too..."
Haha...no, used to. Naw, just North of Houston.
The state needs to increase sales tax and drop property tax. This way, the illegal get to help pay for the infrastructure they use.
