“benefit/benefit: mutualism
benefit/neutral: commensalism
benefit/harmed: parasitism
neutral/neutral: neutralism
neutral/ harmed: amensalism
harmed/harmed: competition”
Thanks for that; now these are part of my vocabulary. “Symbiotic” has a firmly rooted vernacular meaning, though, corresponding to the author’s interpretation, that won’t yield easily, regardless of what biologists say. It’s a natural mistake.

Agreed 100% on all counts. I'd just hope someone reporting on a scientific matter would be a little more familiar with the terminology.
To be perfectly honest, I'm pretty sure I'm being a little hypocritical here and have probably used 'symbiotic' in the vernacular sense despite knowing better. For some purposes it may be the more effective way of communicating, depending on the audience. But in this case, I think it resulted in a little stumble.

Heck there's lots of living fossils in Congress.
Why Nancy Pelosi appeared in the early Mesozoic Period.

One of the most fascinating “living fossil” tales for me is the survival of the Coelacanth.

When I was a youngster my family had an enclycopedia set that had a $100,000 reward page for a dead or alive specimen of this fish,
CoelacanthThe last I've read, they're found at least two widely separated schools of these fish today. Back then, they thought they were exinct but kept hearing reports of people catching fish that resembled them.

There are things under the ocean that we may not discover for another hundred years..................

Sooner than that I fear, some folks will discover an ancient lake; somehow connected to fire.

Anyone here ever feel like being a living fossil in the morning before coffee?
To: Redcitizen
Not always, sometimes it happens after that.
