Ga. PD launches 'Shoot to Incapacitate' program
Atlanta Journal-Constitution (through Police 1) ^ | 5/7/2021 | Brad Schrade

Posted on 05/09/2021 5:36:06 AM PDT by No.6

(excerpt) The training is part of a new program launched by the West Georgia agency meant to address some of these questions. The program, called "Shoot to Incapacitate," is challenging decades of police orthodoxy around use of deadly force. Instead of teaching officers to always aim for available center mass of the body — usually the chest, upper torso and head — the training is giving them another option if they must fire their weapons in the line of duty.

The course is the first of its kind in Georgia and could well be a first in the nation. It is teaching officers that in some instances where they are authorized to use deadly force, they have the option to aim for the pelvic region, abdomen, legs and arms of a person posing a threat. The idea is that a gunshot to these areas, while still potentially deadly, could stop the threat while increasing the chance that the wounds will not be fatal.

I am sure that part of this training involves watching a lot of old Roy Roger and Gene Autry cowboy movies.

Do they teach them how do get dozens of shots out of 6-shot revolvers without ever reloading?

The closest I ever came was possibly firing an M-79 at VN fisherman who got too close. Hell, I forgot where the safety was. Luckily my Captain who spoke Vietnamese and cleared up the situation.

Right-cities will have to prepare for the mountain of ‘disabilities’ law suits the wounded criminals will present

Not dead, but blinded, or lame....etc. ??? That will be expensive!!

Some people have been watching too many episodes of The Rifleman.

I love the show, Lucas McCain was always shooting the gun right out of the hand of any person who is surely going to turn their life around.
But, if they were scum...dead meat.

Yes, however my dad who was wounded in his left knee once in WW2 and then again in Korea and in the 80’s finally had to have his leg amputated, always said that’s where he would shoot someone after all the pain and suffering he had endured.

Of course with current medical care today vs. what was state of the art fom the 40’s to the 80’s, its doubtful it woukd have the samecresul as his.

The enemy is trying to alter the rules of engagement in their own favor. And the politicians, spineless or worse, are more than happy to oblige.

Imagine if we had “shot to incapacitate’ in WW 2 rather than to destroy the enemy. Are the antifa/BLM thugs really much different than the hard-core Nazis of the 1930s?

The US is morphing into the third reich, and idiotic politicians are welcoming the change. When people’s lives and property are on the line, I EXPECT the cops to use deadly force.

Explain it to me

OK, against my better judgement, I'll indulge you. First, I say this as someone that has been professionally trained to shoot people at distance with a long gun and up close with various CQB weapons. I'm not some Fudd with a subscription to Soldier of Fortune, or some gun bunny magazine. Go look at a drawing of the veins and arteries in the pelvic and leg region. Let's put aside the idiocy of someone thinking that a normal person (badge aside, that's exactly what LEO are) under extreme stress is going to make what is essentially a called shot. A bullet through either of those locations is just as apt to hit a point of major blood supply. You can bleed out just as fast if shot in the leg as you will in the chest. That's not me pooh-poohing what I think is an extremely uninformed and stupid idea. That's just stating plain fact.

I'll add this, too. Look at the definition of "deadly force". No where will you find the word incapacitate. If you not are going to point your weapon at someone and pull the trigger without the knowledge or intent of killing them, then you shouldn't be pointing your weapon at them and pulling the trigger. Legally and morally it's wrong to do so.

The statistics I’ve seen give trained LEOs a score of 25% hitting anybody, meaning when they shoot center mass they miss 75% of the time. Now let’s see, how’s this going to work? Shooting at the range and real life situations are not in the same league. Real life pedestrians miss 90% of the time in real life drama.

I like the way you think. :)
