This is long and complicated, but Vespa is not completely accurate in his summary of the work. The authors argue, with much data to back them, that the primary route of transmission is indoor, well-mixed air. For that case, distance from the “spreader” matters little, as long as the air is shared. What is most critical is the length of time of exposure and how long the virus remains floating in air, which in turn depends on air turnover and room size. Activity level also matters. They provide equations for calculating risks. However, they strongly support masks as preventing large droplets from coughs, sneezing and singing. They also provide references showing almost ZERO outdoor transmission. Worth a look at the original article for more details.
