Virginia moving to eliminate all accelerated math courses before 11th grade as part of equity-focused plan

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is moving to eliminate all accelerated math options prior to 11th grade, effectively keeping higher-achieving students from advancing as they usually would in the school system.

Loudoun County school board member Ian Serotkin posted about the change via Facebook on Tuesday. According to Serotkin, he learned of the change the night prior during a briefing from staff on the Virginia Mathematics Pathway Initiative (VMPI).

"[A]s currently planned, this initiative will eliminate ALL math acceleration prior to 11th grade," he said. "That is not an exaggeration, nor does there appear to be any discretion in how local districts implement this. All 6th graders will take Foundational Concepts 6. All 7th graders will take Foundational Concepts 7. All 10th graders will take Essential Concepts 10. Only in 11th and 12th grade is there any opportunity for choice in higher math courses."

His post included a chart with what appeared to be set math courses for 2022-2030.

VDOE spokesperson Charles Pyle indicated to Fox News that the courses would allow for at least some variation depending on students' skill level. "Differentiated instruction means providing instruction that is catered to the learning needs of each child (appropriate levels of challenge and academic rigor)," Pyle said.

On VDOE's website, the state features an infographic that indicates VMPI would require "concepts" courses for each grade level. It states various goals like "[i]mprove equity in mathematics learning opportunities," "[e]mpower students to be active participants in a quantitative world," and "[i]dentify K-12 mathematics pathways that support future success."

During a webinar posted on YouTube in December, a member of the "essential concepts" committee claimed that the new framework would exclude traditional classes like Algebra 1 and Geometry.

‘Bet plenty of parents, grandparents, retirees with know-how could get together to teach pods of kids.’

and can you imagine in today’s corporate world, when the time comes for the kid to create his resume and apply for position, that HR is going to seriously consider ‘mommy, daddy, and mee-maw’ in the section about educational background...?

“If I had to send my kids to school now.... we’d be looking into private school”

Most private schools, including parochial, are just as “woke” as the public schools now.

Homeschooling: My niece was leaning toward the Abeka program, then the BLM/Antifa activist crowd was going to shut them down for being racist. (My niece’s son is black.) I don’t know if they caved or not, but everything good is under attack.

You just have to be so careful. It seems that home schooling is the best option so you know what’s going on every single minute.

I got the same crap when I yanked my son out to home school him. Pressure from the school. Members of the school board and teachers I went to church with. 🙄

Both my kids did college classes at 15 through dual enrollment and graduated HS with Associate’s.

Whether or not you home school your kids..I would encourage people to donate to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). I think they will be trying to make that illegal soon. 😡

Rush would hve been all over this. He always said that hte left, in their focus on making everyone “eual,” knew they couldn’t lift up the bottom, so they had to push down the top. Once again, proof that Rush was right.

You’re right, we will always be “paying for loser public education” unless we can get educated enough to get rid of it. lol that will never happen

2+2=4 and that is racist so 5 is the correct answer if that is what the student “feels” it is.

Greater equity could be achieved by eliminating all math courses altogether.

“Equity” means equality of outcome, regardless of innate talent or efdort. It never been possible anywhere it’s been tried. But you do get communism, which is their real goal. All else are just necessary steps down that path.

It must be fought in the trenches, or each step will occur, and there is no going back once taken.

Not yet..... my sister home schooled her 3 and they are all excelling in college. One a robotics engineer major, another wants to be a veterinarian, and the 3rd a speech therapist. One day the liberals will find a way to outlaw home school I’m afraid.

This the path of “equality of outcome” - if some kids can do better take away the means of achieving that.

My guess is that there’s certain demographics that take the advanced classes and some that don’t. How do you make them equal? LOWER ALL BOATS. This is the opposite of exceptionalism. Do they believe the rest of the world will follow this model? While we’re dumbing down our students they’re trying to make theirs as smart and educated as possible.

These people are idiots.

The property taxes on a house worth $500k in Fairfax aren’t anywhere close to $950 a month.

They don’t ignore their mathematically gifted students...

$1.150 per $100 of assessed value.

It’s the first Google search result for “fairfax county property tax rate”

I assume you have access to Google.
