Another Democrat-Controlled City Is Having Problems Recruiting People to Join Its Police Force

The Philadelphia Police Department is struggling to hire new recruits for the force as it is facing a severe understaffing problem and rising crime rates.

6ABC reported dozens of new recruits report for training every three months, but the last class graduated in December and the next class is not slated to start until May. Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5 President John McNesby told 6ABC it has been a perfect storm of circumstances that have led to the current shortage, with many officers taking early retirement and few training classes because of COVID-19.

"And you got to remember that once you go into the academy, it takes you about 10 months to finish. So, we're not looking at putting any boots on the ground until maybe next Spring," McNesby said.

There is also a new policy that requires all applicants to be living in Philadelphia before they start at the police academy.

"Nobody is going to move to Philadelphia hoping that they get a job. They want to make sure they secure employment, then move in," McNesby explained.

All of this has led prospective recruits to seek law enforcement jobs outside the city. This comes at a time when police morale is low nationwide amid incidents that have lead to riots. In addition to experiencing rioting shortly after George Floyd's murder, Philadelphia experienced another wave of rioting after an officer shot a black man who charged at him with a knife. Despite the body camera video showing the officer acted in self-defense, rioting and looting struck the city for two days.

The Los Angeles Police Department also has fewer officers than what it is budgeted for, again because of early retirements and resignations. Its budget was also cut last year, but Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) just proposed a 3 percent increase in funding for the upcoming fiscal year, owing in part due to the city's rise in crime.

Portland, which experienced almost nightly riots last year, saw many of its police officers leave the force, citing lack of support from the city, being overworked, and having better opportunities elsewhere. All of this is occurring while certain crime rates have reached new highs.

Where else can a HS grad be making >$100,000 per year after 4 years?

White cops, don’t go to the democrat-controlled cities. First, they are going to pass over you for unqualified members of America’s #1 “oppressed” group. Second, if you are hired, you will be thrown to the wolves. You will get no support. Third, a large part of your job will be in the ‘hoods where they hate you for being White.

There are a lot of nice Republican towns where you would be given full support. Problem is, they don’t need many cops since the folks don’t commit crime! Funny thing! I wonder what might be the reason for that!

Salaries will need to rise dramatically to attract capable people to become law enforcement officers. I for one think it is a good idea. I think many taxpayers would agree.

No cop who can get a job elsewhere is going to want to work anywhere that has a large black population, that’s for sure.

Around the Miami Vice era the city of Miami had serious difficulties recruiting police recruits.
Sooo, they lowered their standards.
They hired folks you would not let walk your dog.
And they had a series of cop killings and drug deals where cops made LOTS of money.
Just saying.

Whites living in the suburbs have no business policing inner city blacks. Lower the recruiting standards and give the crackheads a gun and a badge.

We should not be arm-wrestling over the thugs of society and honorable men.

I only mention the following as a point of reference in light of policing vis-a-vis the black population. In days of my youth growing up in a Southern city, the police force employed black policemen as well as white policemen. The black side of town was policed only by the black policemen and they definitely took care of enforcing the law and dealing with the the crime and violence of the black “trash”, with black community support I might add. Since today’s race issues seem to involve interactions between white police and black citizens, maybe going back to the old way of doing things should be considered?

I think many potential recruits figure that rather than deal with scum in the big blue cities they might as well train to become and plumber .... still have to deal with scum, but better pay and more respect.

Just an aside;

“There is also a new policy that requires all applicants to be living in Philadelphia”

I’ve seen many places try that for city /county jobs and fail. Can’t get enough applicants.

RE: It’s gonna be a very hard time getting and keeping cops.

Pretty soon, only those who can afford private security will feel secure.

Tough luck for the rest of the peasants. Be sure to practice using your guns.
