A new analysis by The Globe and Mail's Urban Affairs reporter and Architecture Critic argues that race, gender, and economic status "can all be barriers" to Toronto's free and publicly accessible green spaces.
The article asserts that Toronto's ravines are only accepting of people's different backgrounds and income levels "in theory," and cites the case of black outdoorswoman Jacqueline L. Scott, who says that the lack of diverse faces makes it less likely for people of colour to go to green spaces—something that is sometimes called a self fulfilling prophecy.
The article argues that concerns around representation discourage "racialized people" living near ravines from using their public backyards, and that hurdles such as a "lack of signs indicating where to enter a ravine" remain in place.
Another barrier, according to University of Toronto doctoral student Ambika Tenneti, is that "people of colour communities like to sit and chat around," an activity that is difficult to do in ravines, which are "generally trails."

That’s what they believe of themselves, something so blatantly foolish that not even the most bigoted Klansman would believe it.
You can’t coexist with attitudes like that.
It sounds like an arguement fir a Canadian version of section 9 housing.
“You can’t coexist with attitudes like that.”
See my tag line.

So I guess me going up to Gatineau Park to hike or snowshoe is racist as well because black people are not up there.
Break out the chest wader, s**t's getting deep.
Totally unrelated to this thread ... you’ve described one of the reasons why you live in the best metro area in North America that isn’t in Alberta. :-)
And take it from me, Girlfren, that's a lot of hiking.
Yep.
I see lots of East Asians on hiking trails, perhaps even to a greater proportion to their population than whites. Since when did Asians become Caucasians?
I know, as a white man, that I have used my white man ways to block black people from shopping at Gander Mountain so that they remain ignorant of camping and hunting and exploring the world around them.
What utter BS. The LEFTISTS AND DEMOCRATS have done this with their insipid regulations on guns and fees to get into campgrounds while hounding black people onto “government compounds” into the cities to “teach them how to live” which never includes gun handling, camping or basic ag skills.
It’s become blindingly obvious to me that the the Democratic Party is THE sole reason that black people have not integrated into society and that they go out of their way to deprive black people of their civil liberties SYSTEMATICALLY while accusing others of their sins.
There was a time when such idiocy would not have been conceivable or tolerated. I truly believe that such assertions are testing the extent to which people can be convinced that 2 + 2 = 5.
apparently we all look alike
What about natural bridges, are they racist? 😀
More and more the LEFT resembles a college dorm BS session in striving to find the most ridiculous, the most outlandish, the most ‘far out’ thing to focus on. It resembles the juvenile far more than the adult.
However, the problem is this, for the LEFT, it WORKS! It gets into the social media like it is greased! Sure it may only be 10% of such items but frequently it is the very most outlandish because they get the most ‘views. and revenue!
Soon, if trends continue, we will see ever increasing resegregation on a voluntary basis, a vision the Dr King would have boggled at. G-d help us all!
The solution is simple. Fill in the ravines. Might as well start with the biggest, the Grand Canyon.
Blacks don’t generally care for hiking and camping, therefore those activities are racist. We have to seriously start laughing out loud at these people who put this crap forward. Ridicule them. Shame them for their willful ignorance. Seriously. They really don’t know how to handle it.
When they invented caulk which is white.
“the LEFT resembles a college dorm BS session”
More like the ‘Red Guard’ coming to to beat you and send you out to be farmers.
