None of these people wear masks “all day every day.” In fact, they wear them only as required by the specific type of work they’re doing and then almost always just for short time periods.

That’s one of the keys. Another is to wear them properly, and to be mindful of doing things that compromise the mask filtration.

It has been clear that few enough people do those things that the potential benefits are not generally realized, leaving a larger group that experience the downsides.

And then they litter the place, there are discarded masks all over the place.

I'm certainly in that category. I keep the same mask in my car for when I go in grocery stores and such (so that I can keep the krazy Karen's off my case) but I rip it off soon as I get out the door.

Never had any of this so-called "Covid" but if I did, I probably thought it was the common cold.

I've had the same mask for over a year now. Don't think I ever washed it either.

Some people are just wearing them wrong.

If you wear them on the back of your head, instead of the front, you help to prevent the spreading of some of those cooties congregating on the back of your head, to the heads of all those innocent people around you.

diffuse lung disease. Nothing to worry about for ‘two weeks to flatten the curve’ but maybe of concern after a year...

I would offer that the professions you listed (on a normal day) would require wearing a fresh mask/respirator for each work activity that required it. A fresh mask will shed less particles than a reused mask. Just as a carbon-filtered respirator sheds less carbon dust than an old one. If you take a surgical mask and put it on the dash of your car for a week, it will disentegrate into a fine dust, similar to the dust you breathe in by reusing the same mask over and over. Repeated laundering of cloth masks breaks down the fibers, too (we see it as lint in the dryer trap). Repeated inhaling of microscopic fibers is not good for your lung health. That is why surgical and N95 masks are labeled for one-use only.

Mask for viruses equals chain link fence for mosquitoes.

Just for your size comparison.

Viruses can’t exist in the open air. Air rapidly denatures the viral proteins. Your mosquito is dead on contact before it ever reaches the fence unless it has a big car (water droplets) to keep it safe.

Just for your understanding of how viruses actually work.
