Their side: “All gun violence is the fault of White Supremacists. Confiscate all guns! And defund all Police!”

Our side: “Get our of our way, We are leaving.”

In the 18th century, “well-regulated” meant “well trained.” The federal government should mandate cheaper and more plentiful ammunition so everyone could afford to have more range time.

Definitely remove any taxes and fees on firearms and ammo. The federal government also needs to remove the unconstitutional restrictions on training with firearms on taxpayer land, including military bases and the service academies.

Civilian militiamen who wish to be trained on any weapon, 105mm howitzers for example, are to be provided the weapons, the trainers, the firing range, and the ammo.

“Matthew McConaughey says both sides have ‘got to talk’ about gun violence”

Does that mean addressing the problem of criminals and illegals possessing illegal firearms or is he just blathering about law abiding citizens guns?

I’ll talk about gun violence to the extent that the Left talks about Open Borders and Left-wing judical activism. How’s that for a compromise?

If he starts listing gun/violent crime stats by race, I’m willing to listen.

Life imitates art. I'll start taking celebrity opinions on guns seriously when they stop staring in and making a living off of films which glorify gun violence. In Mathew's case, that would be Mud, a film particularly notable for way it justifies gratuitous mayhem with firearms.

Some truth to that ...the margins in Texas are tight

It’s a back and forth

Tejano Latinos moved right big time last election

Yet recent Latino immigrants legal or illegal voters are very democrat voting

As are the other groups you mentioned

A coalition of tejanos and whites could hold em off if both groups keep fat margins

But that’s not likely ....that zest in 2020 was for Trump

Not the GOPe

And younger educated whites and tejanos are decidedly liberal

It’s not good

In 1980 and 84 Reagan took 2/3 the vote

Trump who was wildly popular in Texas relatively speaking took 52%

I warned demographics were destiny here 20 years ago and was run off as a racist by the wolf packs in 2005

The thirst or impulse to be seen as non racist is the Achilles heel of the white race today in most of western civ

In those days, it meant well trained, adjusted correctly, tuned up, all of the moving parts work well together and harmoniously, in good time.

Think close order drill, marching, being on time at the right location in the proper uniform. As opposed to a rag tag band of sad sacks who can’t shoot, can’t march, and lose their mess kit at the earliest opportunity.

The equipment wasn’t provided to them, they were expected to show up with their own weapons, powder, and ball and kit at very short notice. Central storage of arms or armories weren’t tactical enough. Citizen soldiers, able to he mustered from the home or farm and deployed directly to “trouble spots” (without having to detour to the armory and pick up their gear) was very much speedier.

A watch or clock (for example) was said to be “well regulated” if it kept good time, the number of seconds gained or lost in a week was recorded by the maker or jeweler. The owner would then add or subtract the same number of seconds every week to keep it in time.

“Well regulated” did not mean a bunch of restrictions and limits and bureacratic nonsense placed upon people nor firearms, it meant absolutely none of that.

The important thing to understand the first sentence is not binding on the second sentence, which is the heart of the issue. “...the Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms Shall Not be Infringed.”

That’s nonsense. The latin word “regula” means “a rule” and regulate has never meant anything other than “governed by rules.”

I agree with you that it’s a result of lowering our moral standards along with loss of the concept of honor. Once people didn’t want to dishonor their own name and their family name. No no one cares.

Give it up, Matthew; you’ll never be Gov. of Texas with that mindset.

In the context of the times, “well regulated” meant “well trained” and “ready to go” and the like. Fully deployable as it were, in modern parlance. What it did not mean was “burdened by an absurd level of excessive bureaucratic, contradictory, ever changing and arcane red tape and anti-gun jiggery-pokery.”

This is the problem we run into as a society on most any subject, there are literally primary source documents at our fingertips where we can read exactly what the authors who wrote these amendments intended and discover for ourselves exactly what their thinking and reasoning was. Instead, we’re treated to pseudo-intellectuals or quack “experts” with an axe to grind who fill everybody’s heads with nonsense.
