NASA's Mars helicopter Ingenuity is ready to make its first flight attempt Monday

The big day is nearly here for the team behind NASA's Mars helicopter Ingenuity, who've spent six years developing the first aircraft to fly on the Red Planet.

On Monday (April 19), the ultra-lightweight robot will try taking off into the Martian sky and if it succeeds, this maneuver will be the first powered, controlled flight on another planet. Ingenuity is scheduled to take off at 3:30 a.m. EDT (0730 GMT) on Monday, but its flight controllers are wary.

If Ingenuity makes it off the Martian ground, NASA will broadcast a livestream of the first test flight data as it reaches Ingenuity's mission team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California. That livestream starts at 6:15 a.m. EDT (1015 a.m. PDT) on Monday.

Monday's flight will mark the second time NASA has been poised to fly Ingenuity on Mars. The Mars helicopter's first flight attempt on April 11 was delayed by a timing glitch in its systems, which mission engineers have addressed.

I hope it does not emit any carbon dioxide.

Did Marvin the Martian give it flight clearance?

I sure hope the Ingenuity team is better at what they do than the writer and proofreader of this piece.

Aung added that the chopper's energy profile, thermal models, and rotor operating speeds all look great, and that its sensors have been turned on. All is ready to go for a potentially historic operation. "We will test, prove, and learn regardless of the outcome in this first attempt," Aung said.

Flux Capacitor -- fluxing.

Here's an overview that was published prior to the landing.

It includes the details of the land surveying measurements.

"Twitcher’s point (star): Perseverance’s parking spot during the Ingenuity flight tests. “Twitcher” is a British (and now Martian) term for those who travel long distances to see a rare bird."

A 10 x 10m square is an are, and as the measurement is also published in feet, 33 x 33 = 1089, same as "Megillat Ruth" [מגילת רות‎], the 85-verse book that is the "birth announcement" for King David.

Four square rods. The "airfield" for the $85 mil Ingenuity.

Among the early Anglo-Saxons, the rod was the fundamental unit of land measurement.

A rod is a scepter. Why was Flora looking up at Mars Hill (the place of first light and first wind) from the field of the golden scepters (goldenrod)?

She knew that all the flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today.

Ingenuity, source of the "Aha!" moment - the golden lightbulb moment born out of Perseverance. Golden "midnight" oil (the secret ingredient is the Spirit of Elohim)...

Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year

Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

I don't get the point of this helo. We've had rovers there for some time. And what's with NASA wanting to go back to the moon? It's a dead hunk of rock and we know it. Maybe NASA is thinking of building a launch platform for Mars?

Seems Elon Musk has more vision than the entirety of NASA. Musk and his fellow engineers figured out how to return and land a singular rocket on a platform - at sea no less. Seems to me that NASA is a waste of tax dollars nowadays. Let private enterprise take it from here. BTW, Boeing and others are working on return rockets and civilian rides, also.

Mars should be the mission, not the cold dead Moon, except for civilian excursions.

this maneuver will be the first powered, controlled flight on another planet.

Of which we're aware.

The Moon is an enormous source of resouces, right next door, in easy reach.

It would be stupid to ignore it. Use it as a gateway to the universe.

Mars missions can be greatly facilitated by using lunar resources.

Just like Gettysburg, and Điện Biên Phủ.

Control the high ground, control the battle.

Luna is the high ground, (for now.)

I don't remember the usable resources in all the rocks and soil samples we accumulated in our Moon missions. Maybe I missed it. However, I agree that a launch facility on the Moon could be a gateway to Mars, the universe not so much. Interstellar travel is beyond our technology.

However, if we don't self-destruct, some day deep Solar System travel will be possible for humans. Anything beyond our System is pointless, unless we have Warp Drive that's faster than light.

I don't get the point of this helo.

It's a living parable.

Ingenuity *is* life on Mars. Born from the belly of Perseverance ("Percy") on April 3, 2021, SOL 43, between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Matthew 13

17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.

A SOL is a Mars-Day, and all the flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today.

DAVID Seeds - says on the package:

"America's Favorite Seed Brand"

"Est. 1926",

which was the year of the rocket:

>>>

By 1926, Goddard had constructed and successfully tested the first rocket using liquid fuel. Indeed, the flight of Goddard’s rocket on March 16, 1926, at Auburn, Massachusetts, was as significant to history as that of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk.

>>>

Robert Goddard's contributions to missilery and space flight would make a lengthy list. Below are some highlights.

Explored the practicality of using rocket propulsion to reach high altitudes, even the moon (1912)

"LOS ANGELES - NASA hopes to score a 21st-century Wright Brothers moment on Monday as it attempts to send a miniature helicopter buzzing over the surface of Mars in what would be the first powered, controlled flight of an aircraft on another planet."

Mars Helicopter Flight Test Promises Wright Brothers Moment for NASA

The earth will be a resource depleted toxic waste dump ruled by Nazi’s long before we have it together enough as a species to colonize other worlds.

Mars should be the mission, not the cold dead Moon, except for civilian excursions.

Mars is a bigger waste of resources than the moon. The moon is halfways justifiable at least. But Mars? Why? Because it's there?

We would be better served launching the space equivalent of an aircraft carrier into orbit. That should be the mission: Launching a nuclear powered mothership capable of remaining in orbit for 100 years.

One of the few decent things over the last few years has been the space program. I hope it keeps going so we can at least keep well ahead of China.

I am not a big fan of NASA, but these unmanned missions are working well.

The helo idea is a good one imho—cover a lot of ground and gather a lot of information.

We don’t know what we don’t know.
