Believe it or not hurricane season starts in less than 50 days in the Atlantic. So what’s in store in the tropics here in 2021? Will it be a repeat of 2020? Will it be quieter?
Enter Colorado State University (CSU) and their 2021 hurricane season outlook -- one that may not be what you want to hear.
Researchers at CSU are once again predicting an above average hurricane season this year. The main driver behind that prediction is the likely absence of El Niño, according to the release. Other factors include near-normal tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures and much warmer than normal subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures.
So why does the presence of El Niño -- or lack thereof -- matter for hurricanes in the Atlantic?
“El Niño tends to increase upper-level westerly winds across the Caribbean into the tropical Atlantic, tearing apart hurricanes as they try to form,” according to CSU’s Dr. Phil Klotzbach.
The lack of El Niño is what led CSU researchers to forecast 17 named storms, 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes (category 3+). Those numbers are above the climatological average of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

Karl, I think you know a lot more about this than I do. :-))
After Katrina...they predicted more 5’s....and we’ve had nothings compared to Katrina...and how many years is that??
“What was with last year’s voyage into the Greek alphabet?
Really genuine or hyped hopes?”
This is due to the fact the Climate Alarmists are naming hurricanes today that would never have been named in the past. They name storms that are of no consequence today. Storms of minimal strength that spin into the middle Atlantic and die there. This is a very recent practice. And, many Meteorologists have spoken out against this as Weather Porn for political purposes.
Predictions are on the left, results on the right for 2012 - 2017. Judging by a quick review of those years, overestimating seems to be the rule.
Everything is anything, and anything is everything, because of global warming, er I mean climate change...
Good thing their jobs don’t depend on accurate predictions of hurricanes.
I remember looking in the Farmer’s Almanac when my son moved to Texas. yup...hurricanes every year...
Michael at Panama City and Mexico Beach was as bad as Katrina was for Biloxi and Gulfport.
Katrina was bad for New Orleans was because of Mayor Nagin and incompetent local government (broke pumps and no evac plan) and the fact that the city is in a 25 feet below sea level bowl.
Wow... mountain region, climate change libs are now hurricane season experts. 🤔
There's just no way Xiden and his incompetent mal-administration filled with unqualified trannies, homo's, stupid progressives and more could ever do a proper hurricane response.
Ping!

That’s what I figured. I was alerted numerous times last year but seemed to recall that some fizzled out before the big day/landfall.
I hope the are wrong because girl child Lina Hidalgo as county judge would spell ruin in Texas during such a disaster

even with a 90% drop in daily Covid cases she won’t take the county out of the red zone
We might be entering a grand solar minimum (controversial, but could be.)
And, IIRC, there is an inverse correlation with sunspot activity and hurricane activity.
No matter what, the leftists will manage to attribute anything to the big con that is "climate change".
they say this every year....absurd voodoo non sense....
Yes, it looks like the hurricanes are generated by global cooling. The tropical regions are of pretty constant temperature. The global worming/cooling (assuming such exists) affects the moderate and arctic regions more. So the difference between tropic and moderate climate regions tend to decrease with “global warming” and so the hurricanes decrease, with cooling, the gradient increase and so more hurricanes.
And...Say it LOUD!
They can’t get the weather correct for a day, and they are predicting a season? Do they work in Fauci’s office?
