'I'm Very Proud of Him:' Sergeant Major of the Army Reacts to Black Lieutenant's Traffic Stop

The sergeant major of the Army commended the second lieutenant whose December traffic stop prompted a lawsuit and the firing of a Virginia police officer for remaining cool as a pair of cops pointed their weapons at him.

"Like many of you," Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston tweeted Monday, "I was concerned by the video of [2nd Lt. Caron] Nazario's traffic stop in December. He represented himself and our Army well through his calm, professional response to the situation -- I'm very proud of him."

Good post. Any member of the armed forces would be best served by being apolitical in these times.

“The one officer lost his bearing.”

A telling sign: he was immediately fired. Wouldn’t there normally there would be a hearing where facts were collected before such a decision was made?

He planned it. Watch the video at 56. He’s cool as a cucumber, smirking, as he sets up his video to record the interaction to make himself a viral superstar.

I was moderately on the soldier's side until I watched a video uploaded by a Freeper yesterday (sorry...don't remember who). I changed my mind. The soldier was a jerk and, while the officers were jerks also (especially Gutierrez...the fired one), the entire thing could've been over in two minutes if the soldier had cooperated...even after the 100 second "evasion run".

The person hosting this review of the actions that night is an ex-cop. It's a split-screen with four videos on the monitor simultaneously..including the soldier's camera that was recording the entire time!. It shows the soldier willfully being obstinate and disobeying the officer's orders. To me, the soldier videoing the incident tells me he wanted his SJW 15 minutes of fame.

The soldier should not be celebrated as a hero.

You’ve said ‘high speed chase’ and ‘viral video’. I didn’t see any high speed chase. And now bodycams are ‘setup’ in advance?

What planet are you from?

Was it visible?

I could see the shadow of it in one of the videos. That was at night, backlit by the gas station lights. But anyone directly behind it with headlights or a spot should have easily been able to see it.

This is why the Woke Left Pentagon is intentionally driving out conservatives.

The only officers they want to keep will be woke proggies like this 2nd Lt.

And who in his right mind will be a LEO in this environment?

Travis didn’t mention bodycams. He was talking about the soldier’s video.

I’m still unsure what camera he is referring to in post 60.

I would have hoped the now senior enlisted we trained would maintain the force professionalism.

That response to a officer refusing to follow orders will have major repercussions with the enlisted following suit.

My hopes are about gone for our Union.

Well, I wouldn’t read too much into that. Most cops who don’t work for unionized forces (usually in large urban areas) are generally employment-at-will hires. They can be fired for just about any reason, presuming they don’t qualify as a protected class and the firing doesn’t violate other civil rights.

If this happened in NYC, there is no way the cop could have been fired that quickly because of collective bargaining.

"Little town on east gate of Ft Riley has been notorious for decades for this."

Ogden, KS. I lived there while stationed at Riley, and you are 100% correct.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to excuse the Lt. I'm just saying that it appeared a sticker was there. And only from one video shot at night. What happened after that looks to me to be a setup by the Lt. Once he was pulled over, he should have at least complied with the orders.

At the same time, when you are lit up by the police, if you wish to go somewhere where there is more light or are more witnesses, I've always been told to dial 9-1-1 and give your location and state that for safety reasons you are proceeding to a better lit, more populated area. And you do so at normal speeds.

The Sergeant Major of the Army may think he has boldly spoken out on behalf of the LT, but is oblivious to the fact that he has just undermined every Military Policeman and DOD Cop trying to conduct law and order operations on every Army installation.

Good work Sergeant Major! Way to have your troops backs!
