CHICAGO (WLS) -- The airline industry expects to recover from the pandemic in a couple of years and when it does, United plans to diversify the cockpit.
It launched a flight school called United Aviate Academy with the goal of training 5,000 pilots by 2030. Half of which will be women and people of color.

I’d rather the pilots be selected based on aptitude and skill, not some arbitrary demographic box they happen to check. Ah well, I don’t fly anymore. As long as they don’t crash on my head, good luck with that United. Hope you’ve got good lawyers, because you are definitely going to be sued as negligent and directly contributing when (not if,, when) one of your quota hires does something stupid.
Well said, 100% agree. If I can’t get there in the saddle or behind the wheel, I don’t need to get there.
By the time this class of pilots is actually commanding aircraft we will have self driving cars that will make ground transportation much more feasible.
1500 miles in a car with a reclining seat I can sleep in while the car drives itself is preferable to that distance in an airplane.
We have had white male pilots attempt to change a cockpit lightbulb and fly the plane Into the ground.

Proof?
Those airports will look like interesting parking lots for sure.
He’s talking about Eastern Airlines Flight 401. 1972 maybe.
Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. They were approaching Miami from NYC (I think). When gear down was called, the nose wheel light failed to indicate. They went into a holding pattern at 2,000 feet over the Everglades. At around midnight. Completely black, essentially. Altitude hold was set at 2,000 feet.
They deterimend the bulb was probably burned out. They were unable to extract the bulb. One Eastern employee was deadheading (no pun intended). He and the flight engineer I believe (It was a fairly-new Lockheed Tristar) went down below the flight deck to see if the nosewheel was down and locked (it was).
The pilot got frustrated, got out of his seat. Two different flight computers between Pilot and Copilot. He must have disengaged the altitude hold but it didn’t register in the yoke of the Copilot. Two different computers used.
The aircraft began a 3-foot per second descent; They did not feel it nor notice the altimeter. They finally decided the nose gear were down and locked and turned to the airport. They were at 50 feet. One of the wings touched down and down went the whole aircraft.
There were a couple of movies about it; One with William Shatner and one regarding the so-called ghosts of Flight 401.
The Lockheed Tristar was my favorite plane to ride in. Rolls-Royce engines. Spacious.
In “Crash” it’s Eddie Albert as Bob Loft(I’m doing this from memory). That is the name of the real pilot (IIRC). Not the movie character names. Names were changed, of course.
Ron Glass (Barney Miller) was a passenger.
William Shatner was the FAA investigator.
Now I will have to look it up.

Watch what those new hire pilots do with the aircraft and passengers, after another women is defeated in a presidential election.

“Mars Attacks” is coming up in my YT recommendations.
Gots to love them Google robots crawling and spying on ya.
Try to be an IT worker in TX after the Indians took over. Same thing here. I almost like to see other industries falling apart from this disease.
Thank goodness we never fly anymore...
Nice try...
Another reason not to fly the cattle cars of the sky,or,

More incentive to not fly United. They came out as pro-vaccine. No certificate, no flight for you.
