During the 80s, Reagan had to face Communist aggression in
Central American and the Iran Iraq War.
He was forbidden as president to get involved to help the
Contras in Nicaragua or the government in El Salvador.
Anything the Leftists did was framed as only taking place
because the anti-Left forces forced the action. I’m not
convinced the El Salvador government was pristine, but
the alternative would have been another nation going
Communist and hundreds of thousands being displaced and
or dying.
Reagan did everything he could do
In the Iraq/Iran theater, Hussein attacked Iran. Iran
launched counter forces and they went at it for a few
years. Reagan didn’t want Iraq or Iran to win an outright
victory, which was the wise policy at the time.
At one point, he gave Iran some very minimalist help due to
the reality it was not doing all that well at the time.
An outright victory for either nation would have destabilized
the region even more. Reagan made the right move.
Congress was desperate to “get him”. They failed. The
American public overwhelmingly backed Reagan.
Congress coughed up a fur-ball.
The war was covered, but the emphasis was on Reagan doing
something illegal, rather than Carter having done something
extremely ill advised.
I don’t recall death tolls mentioned in real time. I was
shocked years later when I researched it.
They may have touched on the death toll in that time frame,
but I did miss it if they did.
