Growing up I took it that Indians called whites Paleface and whites call Indians Redskins. Why wasn’t it offensive then?

I was at a work meeting years ago and I said something about Indians, and one woman smugly informed me that it was wrong to use that term. I told her my dad and everyone else in his family were Cherokee and they called themselves and other tribes indians, so I didn’t care for a white woman telling me how to speak. She didn’t say a word.
