Yeah I remember all the looting of the local Bakeries. they bypassed the Nike and Apple stores and went straight to the Breadsmith.
Yes, they did appear to target the more high-priced items that you mention. However, I believe this was only so they could trade those items in for cash to buy lots more bread than they could carry in one or two trips to the food isle.
