Based on what I read illegal aliens can be deported for being covicted of committing a crime.

Illegal aliens can be deported administratively without having to be prosecuted for illegally entering the country or any other crime. Unlawful presence is all that is required.

To require a conviction for removal would completely overwhelm or federal court system.
