California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom suggested this week that teachers who do not feel safe returning to the classroom can stay home.
State lawmakers are proposing a $6.6 billion aid package to help schools reopen for in-person learning, including $2 billion to public schools for personal protective equipment, ventilation upgrades and COVID testing. But a portion of the aid package also includes contingencies to allow teachers and school staff to remain home, Fox News reported.
"No one is compelling anybody," the governor admitted on Monday. "We’re creating conditions where we expect in-person instruction. We’re going to provide supports, supplementary supports for people with compromised immune systems, people that are not comfortable going back in."
Newsom told a reporter that some of the funding will be used to cover teachers who refuse to go back to the classroom.
"That flexibility is not just ventilation, it’s not just PPE, it’s not just sanitation," said Newsom. "It’s also personnel to help address those concerns as well."
Teachers' unions, a powerful voice within the Democratic Party, have resisted plans to resume in-person learning, citing ostensible safety concerns. But, like Newsom himself, union officials spearheading the opposition to school reopenings have been caught sending their own children to private school and vacationing in the Caribbean.

That would work...ROFL
I heard Maryland was doing the same.
And the madness continues.....!
My mother told me a story that when she was in high school in the late ‘30’s, they one day locked their teacher out of the classroom and would not let anyone in...They partied the rest of the day and then all got suspended...
She said they had a great time...LOL
Without teachers present, the kids may not become knowledgable, but they definitely will not become more ignorant
Well, this would be a great opportunity for parents to get together and homeschool their own his en masse using the public schools.
Wouldn't that create a furor among the teacher unions.
But, to be real the parents are the ones paying the salaries. So, there's that.
Teachers who work in the dangerous parts of the town will stay home under this racist policy!
“No one is compelling anybody,” the governor admitted on Monday.
Unless you own a restaurant, bar, gym.....

Gavin is trying to straddle the fence. That’s going to make opening the schools three or four times more expensive than it has to be. He is afraid to go against the Teacher’s Unions.
Well, the good news is that, at long last the schools may be opening back up soon. From what I’m hearing, many of the kids are having a truly hard time being away from all their friends, especially the teenagers. The Gov. had to be scared into doing the right thing, with this little ‘ol Recall quickly shaping up.
Well we know who is running the state...and it is not the Governor.

Patriots are reminded that the only union expressly protected by the Constitution is the Union of states.
Otherwise, unions have no more power under the Constitution than the right of their members to vote.
A more lazy and sanctimonious group than unionized public school teachers you would be hard pressed to find.
My father takes pride in the fact he was successful enough to send his grandchildren to private schools.
I really did look for the Babylon Bee gag tag. None found.
Can the smartest kids teach their classmates? Unless, unless....what if persons of color are not in proportionate amounts as the smart kids teaching? Big trouble. Asians will lead in math and probably all other areas. So quotas to keep them down?
A top children’s book expert with whom came into contact when I worked in university libraries told me there were around 6 or more books with this plot: A little immigrant (legal) Asian girl feels alone and awkward as she arrives in the US and starts school. Other kids decide to befriend her and make her feel included and liked. Then she starts to excel in math and other subjects, outpacing all the other kids. Then they feel hostile to her and angry at being number two to her.
Yeah...that’ll work...
Mirrors inner-city culture in which the kid who behaves and gets good grades in school is beaten up for "acting white".
Good point. Still a problem in many places, I hear. A ticket to the bottom of society if kids agree to stay underachieving.
You seem to be implying that people with money send their kids to private schools.
That is often not the case....many choose public schools.
.
With no teachers, do the students elect a proctor?
So, will we have to hire monitors to make sure the kids in class are supposedly learning.
What will that cost us per classroom besides teachers getting paid for not teaching?
