Xi isn't going to take just one bite of the apple when he goes for broke. Let me tell you something very few people know -- the Chinese own the ferry services between the Philippines. No ferry service, no intra-state commerce.
The PLA could seize Taiwan but commensurately simply surround the Philippines in an ersatz blockade, and without ferry service, topple Duterte in two weeks.
The TSA is drooling over the prospect of this.

This will kill business travel to China, if it isn’t dead already. The signs were already there a few years ago when they refused to allow foreigners to use bank accounts with WeChat Pay and AliPay - then pushed hard to get the whole country off of cash and onto these services.
Fall of 2019 I half jokingly suggested to a group we pre-emptively nuke China and get it over with
Looking back that might have been the best choice
