I don't think Pence was even a presidential candidate in 2016.
So the notion that Pence thought the presidency was "his slot" should trigger a caution flag right there.

Why did Pence see Trump as an interloper when Pence was not a presidential candidate in 2016? Apparently, he was headed to defeat in a race for reelection as governor of IN, when Trump elevated him. Not a lesson gratitude
