No more urine tests: Proposed California law would end most workplace marijuana tests

California adults can smoke marijuana without fear of going to jail, but using it after hours can still have consequences at work.

A new bill in the Legislature aims to end a still common employment practice five years after Californians voted to legalize recreational cannabis in which private companies require can workers to test for marijuana use.

Assembly Bill 1256, introduced by Assemblyman Bill Quirk, D-Hayward, is intended to prevent employers from using past evidence of marijuana use, such as a hair or urine test, as justification for discrimination against an employee, such as denying or terminating employment, according to Dale Gieringer, director of California NORML, a sponsor of the bill.

"It is those tests that we want to ban, because they don't detect anything related to impairment," Gieringer said.

Hair and urine can be used to show that a person has consumed marijuana in the past, but not whether they are actively intoxicated with THC, the chief psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

But we legalize alcohol which is exponentially more harmful than pot

Yeah, sure. The recreational use of psychoactive drugs is just no problem whatsoever. What could possibly go wrong? It's all so wrong that the military, employers, insurance companies and parole officers don't understand this.

Is the recreational use of the psychoactive drug alcohol a problem? What should we do about that problem?

It’s more like Vietnam. No so much that we can’t win.. The will is lost.

Even despotisms like Iran and China have drug problems - how would we win a war on drugs while remaining the Land of the Free?

imagine if that alcohol test you took while driving showed you had consumed alcohol in the last 2 weeks. Thats what current urine and hair testing for THC shows.

You read the article - that's against FR rules.

Singapore and Indonesia have a good system. Will never be perfect, but their use rates are incredibly low.

Even among depotisms, they appear to be the exception rather than the rule. And even supposing we could achieve their results by adopting all their methods, how is that consistent with our heritage of limited government and individual liberty?

I have serious issues about legalizing pot.

Don’t wish to have it anywhere around me in any manner or form.

First: It's already around you - 17.5% of Americans used pot in 2019 (and gave $40B to the cartels to get it).

Second: Under the conservative principle of limited government, to ban things for adults the bar is set far higher than 'ridesthemiles doesn’t wish to have it anywhere around him in any manner or form.'
