Evanston, Illinois, is like a lot of American cities. The city just north of Chicago appears picturesque, updated and grand on one side -- but not far away, one can see the signs of economic and racial segregation, despite the city's proud, diverse and liberal reputation.
What sets Evanston apart from other cities, however, is its groundbreaking plan to address the impact of that segregation and Black disenfranchisement: reparations.
The impetus for the city's reparations resolution, first passed in 2019 and spearheaded by 5th Ward Alderman Robin Rue Simmons, is rooted partially in Rue Simmons' experience growing up Black in Evanston.
Rue Simmons acknowledges the concerns of those community members who feel $25,000 is not enough.
"$25,000 is life-saving for some families right now," she said. "But relative to the injury, it's not nearly enough. And I get that."
That's why she hopes more relief will come from reparations at the state and federal levels, including HR-40.
But Evanston's leaders are not waiting for Washington. They plan to begin dispersing funds this spring and hope that is just the first reparative step for Evanston, and for other cities across the country.
"When I introduced reparations in Evanston it was always the first step of many to come," Simmons said. "There is a lifetime of work ahead of me and my children for us to get to justice for the Black community."
She said she remains hopeful, and that she must, to do this work.
"I do believe that we're committed as a city. And I believe that we will advance reparations," Simmons said. "I can't wait to celebrate the family that receives their first reparation benefit. I cannot wait for that day."

I’d be looking to move starting today.
Whatever the dollar figure, it will not be enough. They will spend it and want more. Slavery is the American sin of the father that can never be forgiven.
Remember the fires of Minneapolis. Chicago has a history of fire too.
F*** the goddamned commie "stylesheet"!
Every citizen needs a full DNA test to identify any black blood.
Even one percent of one percent should qualify them for reparations.
Or..maybe they do it the Third Reich way—one eighth counts...
What about recent black immigrants (legal or illegal) from Africa? Do they qualify to receive reparations? Or—if their ancestors sold slaves should they pay the reparations too?
We need to spend billions of dollars to study this....
;-)
The real goal is to take all of Whitey’s money, give it to non-Whitey, and then assure the rapid exit of Whitey from the world of material existence.
If that happens, non-Whitey will wind up poor, because there will be no Whiteys alive to work and give their money to non-Whitey as reparations for non-Whitey’s decades of indolence.
What about the descendants of black slave owners. There were thousands of blacks who owned slaves - more than 3,000 black slaver owners in New Orleans alone.
There was a woman who owned her husband. She sold him after he gave her some lip. Seriously.
“I’m surprised downstate Illinois isn’t thinking of joining Indiana which works so much better.”
Some of my wife’s younger relatives have moved to Indiana after being graduated. They like it.

That would work. All you gotta do is find (or forge) great-grandpa’s birth certificate.
On a more serious note, it’s frightening how much of what’s going on today mirrors the early Third Reich. Mobs beating up opponents in the street, suppression of free speech, etc.
On January 6th we even had our own version of the Reichstag fire.

I quite agree, but Indiana has its own brand of azzholes. After all, Quisling Pence was the Governor once. And Pete Buttigieg was mayor of South Bend. We live in a world full of azzholes.
From another blog:
“I am so glad I saved grandpa’s yellow star—looks like I am gonna need it...”
This is nothing more than a dividing tactic. Gotta keep blacks angry and dependent on da system.
“Reparations is the extraction of money from people, who were never slave owners to be given to people, who were never slaves.”

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we’ve proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.
“We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that pays it is lost!”
Good business opportunity. Open and wings and rims shop. You can have some wings and biscuits while they install the 28’d on your 1991 crown vic!!
It’s a direct violation of the 14th amendment.
Probably do better with a McDonalds and rims. Can I get a fish sandwich, fries and a extra size coke and some 26’s?? “That’ll $2455.57, please pull around to the garage , bay #7,. “
