Who's really Latino?
For millions of Americans, the issues around racial, cultural and ethnic identity are complicated. There are broad debates about how best to describe Americans of Spanish-speaking, Latin American descent (is it Hispanic? Latinx?), and endless choices reflect self-identification preferences.
Claiming Hispanic, Latino or Latinx identity is a matter of personal choice. As the Pew Research Center said in a 2020 report: "Who is Hispanic? Anyone who says they are."
But a recent controversy illustrates the tension between identifying as part of a group and being accused of appropriating an ethnic or racial community.
Until January, Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan was known as a prominent Latina civil rights lawyer in New York City. She was active in social justice organizations and the recipient of prestigious honors. She was senior counsel at a leading Latino advocacy group, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, and president of the National Lawyers Guild.
She contributed to anthologies of Latina writers and published articles on a Latino website, and in 2017, she appeared in a video for Voice Latina, saying she was a "cultural mix of Puerto Rican, Colombian, Italian and some other." Earlier, in a 2015 video, she mentioned dancing salsa while visiting family in Colombia.
Then the online news site Prism Reports alleged that Bannan was not Latina.
According to Tina Vásquez, a senior reporter at Prism Reports, historical records showed that Bannan grew up in Georgia and was of Italian, Irish and Russian heritage.

...technically a minority,...

But not the right sort of minority.
In fact, there is recently a concerted effort to blame everything the globalist/communist front are implementing on Jews. And it’s no longer just Ashkenazi. Israel is becoming the international enemy of the West. There are many, many Sepharad and Mizrahi in Israel and, of course, Ethiopian Jews. But, the Western globalist media tends to emphasize degree of observance to divide Israeli Jews.
Secular globalist collectivists of Jewish ethnicity are marginally acceptable. For now.
You’re right. There is no there there when it comes to who is classified latino/hispanic/etc. I had friends whose (English decended) family emigrated to Uruguay. When the kids moved back, they were “hispanic” according to federal guidelines.
My Grandparents on my mother’s side came over because of persecution. My grandparents on my father’s side came over because of persecution and economics. I’m an American. Not some blah, blah, blah-American. My ancestors countries may have changed, but I have no desire to identify with or go back to those countries. I’m an American. The Constitution describes my rights as an American. If you want to be an *****-American, and assign your cultural heritage in place of the Constitution, please allow me to set your table on Thanksgiving with the children.
I’m tired of these people appropriating “Americans”. Americans are based om the Constitution. These people are not Americans in thought and mind. They only use the Constitution to abuse America.
Psychiatrist Jeffrey Rosenberg in “Love at First Bite”:
“My real name is Van Helsing, I changed it to Rosenberg for professional reasons.”
“Who cares?”
That is the question. Do we go forward with silly tribalism or move on. Claiming minority status has become a victim status money maker which will make it hard to break. It is an industry based upon the same base instincts of the Third Reich, sweetened with a little more civility.
Lol...
“How does that race divide BS taste right now, lefties?”
Probably someday soon, the Left will encourage people to wear badges to identify their level of ethnicity/ethnic privilege.
