Tiger’s Journey
American Thinker.com ^ | February 26, 2021 | William L. Gensert

Tiger Woods, in a one-car accident, flipped his vehicle and suffered, according to Dr. Anish Mahajan, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, “comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula” of his right leg. The leg was stabilized by a rod in the tibia and screws and pins in the foot and ankle.

To give you an idea of what Tiger will need to do, I will tell you my journey. I am not a doctor, and I know it is anecdotal, but I put a lot of time into learning about this type of injury.

On 8/29/07 I was crushed against a garage wall by a tractor-trailer. I had many injuries, but the most evident to onlookers (aside from my vomiting from the effects of the concussion for a year) was the comminuted open fracture of my hand. The doctors advised amputation, which I refused.

The doctor in the emergency room, Keshav Magge (coincidentally a hand plastic surgeon -- God loves me) spent 10 hours taking out and putting in stitches to use what skin and flesh was left to close and cover as much of what remained of my hand as possible so they could do surgery (to put in three pins) in the next few days.

He did not get up to eat or to go to the bathroom. He put in and removed, and put in again, hundreds of stitches, over and over, for the entire day. He has pictures.

Like anyone in a life-changing accident, the memories and the re-think of what actions led to the accident, will haunt Tiger for the rest of his life! But, having seen the pictures of the vehicle, without modern safety design and equipment, it would have been his funeral that we’d be talking about!

Fell from my attic onto concrete garage floor — about 10 feet. Snapped femur in 6 places.

I had migraine’s for year, and kidney stones. Both are extremely painful.

I can tell you though that the pain of that broken femur was beyond excruciating and I can tell you that the pain was far worse than any kidney stone.

I have a steel rod through the femur held in place with 6 plates, nuts and bolts. Another rod attaches top of femur to hip. Was in “official rehab for 18 months, and still continue on my own with my own equipment. It is a long, painful and arduous process to regain full use of a limb so badly injured. Thanks to hard work I succeeded. Good luck to Tiger.

Given his net worth (presumably many, many millions) I can't find much sympathy for him. Even if he's unable to pick up a club ever again he's assured a very,*very* comfortable life.

Riches cannot dissuade a lifetime of pain and discomfort. What a foolish thing to say.

I haven't seen anything about what he was driving. Is this some kind of Rowan Atkinson kind of thing (showbiz star,$500K sports car, maniacal speed)? If so all I can say to Tiger is "you should have known better".

My 18 year old niece was killed in a car accident. She was completely sober but the guy who crossed the double yellow line was completely drunk. At least partially due to the fact that he was "well known to the police" he did 5 years. My niece deserved sympathy. I wonder if Tiger does.

I worked in Emergency Medicine for years...in a big city hospital. I saw death in every single one of its forms...cancer,heart,strokes,car accidents, suicides, drug ODs,murder, etc.

That experience instilled in me a respect for personal accountability. As a result my attitude toward Tiger's current plight is that if he was driving in a reasonable, responsible way when the accident occurred I'd have sympathy for him...regardless of his net worth. If he wasn't then,as I said,he should have known better.

Was in a motorcycle accident, low speed, moron turned left in front of me. Fracture of my left tibial plateau. Took a year to get right with months of physical rehab. Paid well, though. At first sight, thought the guy was a transient tomato picker, but he was a local with good insurance. Phew...

“some kind of Rowan Atkinson kind of thing”

CORRECTED:

some kind of Rowan Atkinson acting kind of thing

I saw this guy in a TV show, in an actual race car, on an actual race track - and he was damm good. Would have lost a LOT of money if there had been betting going on.

Very sad accident and even more so given it most likely could have been avoided. I believe the author had more of a healing process than Tiger will have however it is likely the end of his competitive golf career.

Tiger, having injured his right leg, will probably not be able to drive anywhere for many years, if ever.

My brother-in-law had his leg amputated and a friend had his below the knee. Both have special attachments on the floorboard that allows them to drive with the remaining leg.......

Just googled him to make sure of my facts. Check out this link...and pay particular attention to the mention of $1.4 million of repairs required for the car he wrecked.

Rowan Atkinson $1.4 Million Repair Job

Remind me to not look to you for anything. Regardless of his net worth, if Tiger’s injuries are anywhere as severe as it sounds like they are, he will be anything but comfortable.

You might read your own article:

“In fact Atkinson has the respect of the car aficionados at Top Gear for holding the title as the second fastest celebrity to make it around their test track.”

They’ve show that episode several times. Had I not seen it first, I would have lost a lot of money on it.

As far as the wreck goes, unlike Tiger, I don’t think they’ve ever said Atkinson wasn’t over the speed limit.
Way over.

Driving a new car ( one you are not used to) is like riding a new horse. You could take a ride you did not expect.

I have never been or will be a Tiger fan and I do follow the tour. Still this recent accident I do feel badly for him as I would anyone that would have to go thru what he has and will.

He will have a painful life in the short-term and then later in life as arthritis settles into the damaged areas.

Hopefully for his sake he doesn't get hook on drugs again and find purpose beyond winning golf tournaments. I can only wish him the best.

After reading the article, it sounds as if the author could have saved himself some pain and suffering by having the hand amputated.
