With the US approaching 500,000 Covid-19 deaths, President Joe Biden will mark the grim milestone Monday with a candle lighting ceremony and a moment of silence, the White House said Sunday.
The event, which is set for 6:15 p.m. ET at the White House, will also feature first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff. Biden will deliver remarks on the lives lost ahead of the ceremony. The ceremony underscores the empathetic message Biden has sought to bring to the US coronavirus response since taking office last month -- a departure from his predecessor.
On Friday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the administration was working on plans so the President could use his "own voice and platform to take a moment to remember the people whose lives have been lost, the families who are still suffering."
One day before taking office, Biden, Harris and their spouses held a somber ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate the 400,000 lives lost to Covid-19 in the US at the time. "To heal we must remember," Biden said at the January event. Harris also spoke briefly at the memorial, noting that "for many months, we have grieved by ourselves. Tonight, we grieve and begin healing together."
Their message stands in contrast with former President Donald Trump, who frequently defended his administration's response to the pandemic but rarely expressed grief for the victims. In September, Trump told Axios on HBO that the US Covid-19 death toll, "is what it is."

Covid death numbers are bogus just like the number of illegals are phony.
The 500,000 deaths are not FROM Covid. Most are likely deaths of people who died from the flu and other underlying causes who were to found to ALSO have COVID.
Remember... The hospitals were getting thousands of $$$ for every reported COVID death. .......Of course, under the Harris-Biden administration, the fraud will not be investigated.
WHAT??!! Now, I certainly did not see every appearance or press conference PDJT had regarding COVID-19, but at every one I can remember, President Trump expressed sadness at the loss of life. Just because he did not burst out bawling, shed fake tears, or turn the hurt into a photo op does not mean he did not show empathy.
Good God. I know Jesus instructs me not to hate, but these people (CNN, in this case) really want to make me vomit. The stench they create is utterly revolting.
First time I saw the word empath was a Star Trek episode. I think Biden’s been watching Star Trek TOS, but he isn’t empathetic. He immediately fired all those fuel line people.
I just compared the total mortality average for 2018 and 2019 with the total mortality in 2020...
USA Mortality
2018 + 2019 Average - 2.84 million
2020 - 3.31 million
2020 Excess Deaths - 470,000
COVID Death Total 21 Feb 2020 - 499,000
Approximately 80% of the COVID victims were receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income and were eligible for Medicare or Medicaid.
