Texas governor calls for probe into power grid operator ERCOT
CNBC ^ | TUE, FEB 16 20218:24 PM EST | Staff

Brian Sullivan reports a combination of factors such as a colder-than-expected storm, an industry unprepared for winter weather and a shortage of energy and wind power have created the massive power and water shortage in Texas. Texas also relies on nonprofit, Electric Reliability Council of Texas for its electric power grid, unlike other areas in the U.S., which is problematic. He joins Shep Smith to discuss.

This was bound to happen when Texas eliminated the original electric plan and instituted the ‘Texas Plan’ which put electric company profits over reliability and sufficient additional supplies. Only way to fix this is rip out the Texas Plan by the roots.

5 of the members don’t even live in Texas. I had never heard of them, either.
We have plenty of natural gas in Texas. But, the well pipes do freeze and the field workers were having trouble getting to the sites.

Are you kidding the commiesars in Austin will double down on “renewables” because this time coal and gas failed and we lost a nuke too due to cold. They will be like see it was “thermal” power that failed we must have much.more wind. Bank on it.“.

I heard this also and I can tell you don’t believe it. It’s a lie. A nuclear power plant did not go offline because it got cold and neither did coal. The wind turbines froze and solar failed. They are lying their asses off. It’s amazing how 4 million homes across the state lost power for days but but nearly every commercial property as well as government run warming center shelters all remained on. I think the reason they kept businesses powered up even though most were closed was to create the power shortage and the excuse to cut the power to residential homes. This is not just theory on my part. I have been on the road in the area for hours and I can tell you almost every retail strip center and any commercial property still had power even though most were closed. This was very obvious to anyone who got out during this fiasco. These Ercot people are in a heap of trouble. Wait until the billions in homeowners insurance claims start coming in. Billion dollar class actions are coming.

How about you concern yourself with other things besides “wind” in Texas.
Might want to look up the size of Texas compared to the states you’re touting. Don’t Mess With Texas

Texas has tons of gas but we lack dispatchable storage. We have salt domes in the gulf coast plains that could be mined into massive storage reservoirs which would have prevented some of this, the thermal plants still failed due to lack of winterization having the gas would have helped the plants that could take the cold.

“Natural Gas is good but there have been units shut down that are gas due to there not being enough natural gas, as households get gas before industry...… which is ironic since if you don't have electric to run the fans on the furnace, it's of no use...…“

People, like myself, have natural gas stovetops, fireplaces, and water heaters. Some have natural gas ovens, too.

Those go a LONG way as a useful backup when you have no power.

I drill gas wells and also salt water disposal wells all the rigs are shut down. There was also a massive shut.in of gas and oil wells for a whole slew of cascading failure modes. The cold , ice and snow being the prime factors. Without storage to take the place of.well.head gas the supply crashed and forced curtailment of generation. The last group curtailed from gas use is residential. Over 40,000 megawatts of thermal power dropped off line that’s just a fact. Where the remaining 50_60000 megawatts went to is up to Oncor I watched in real time the grid frequency drop from 60.1hz to 59.2 at which point 10,000 megawatts of demand was shed or the whole grid would have cascaded down. Large office parks and buildings have diesel and natural gas powered generators, as do hospitals and college campuses. UTD has enough generation onsite to run completely off the grid should they need too and during my tenure there as a researcher they did run on internal power during the great ice storm of 2012 for three days. My wife’s school has been off and on their generators since Monday night they opened it up to staff and theirs families who are without power at all it’s a private school facility. Just because lights are on at a commercial facility does not mean it’s getting that power from the grid. Generators have gotten cheap. A whole house generac is $3000 installed and thats the top.end Wi-Fi enabled 15kw dual fuel.propane and natural gas with 250 gallon propane back up tank. People are up in arms about highland park not being dark but most of those homes are well over a million five and nearly everyone has a back up generator and power supply for the security and fire suppression system. My in-laws are parkies and all of their homes have back up power battery that cranks the generators to power the home, water pumps for the sprinklers and security systems 3 grand is nothing in the price of a million dollar home.

And of course governments answer to not enough natural gas is ..... wait for it ..... shut off all new drilling permits, ban fracking and more drilling restrictions and regulation.

Whose been governor for 6 years with two GOP senators. The state government is republican. Heck we even had the presidency and senate til 2 weeks ago. You have to ask at some point how is this the democrat’s Fault. I know we like to blame them for everything and most times it’s valid. But in Texas?????

Well aware that Texas has mass quantities of natural gas. What we are allowed to do with it.....go about obtaining it......storing it....etc. is the problem. We also have a lot of oil. Unfortunately, the refineries were eliminated. And the God awful, worthless windmills were installed 🙄

Who is on the ERCOT board?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Reliability_Council_of_Texas

“On February 16, shortages caused the price of electricity to spike over $9000 for 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of power,[11][12][13] while the week before the lowest price of power was less than $30.”

Follow the money......................

Texas has been under complete R control since A. Richards left office this is 100% in the Rs laps. Bushie Rs and D converts like goodhair and his Rino cabel are how we got here. Placing short term profits over forcing winterize and the associated lower margins or higher tariff rates that are passed through.

I hope Abbott is primaried. I don’t like the idea of endless Governor terms. They get to comfortable and let things fall through the cracks. We’re seeing the results.
