Officials: Chauvin was ready to plead to 3rd-degree murder

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was prepared to plead guilty to third-degree murder in George Floyd’s death before then-Attorney General William Barr personally blocked the plea deal last year, officials said.

The deal would have averted any potential federal charges, including a civil rights offense, as part of an effort to quickly resolve the case to avoid more protests after protests and riots damaged a swath of south Minneapolis, according to two law enforcement officials with direct knowledge of the talks. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the talks.

Barr rejected the deal in part because he felt it was too soon as the investigation into Floyd’s death was still in its relative infancy, the officials said.

That Chauvin had been in plea talks has been previously reported, and those talks appear to have delayed a May 28 news conference called by the U.S. attorney in Minneapolis for nearly two hours as they were ongoing. But the detail on Chauvin agreeing to plead guilty to a specific charge are new and was first reported late Wednesday by The New York Times.

Floyd, a Black man who was in handcuffs at the time, died May 25 after the white officer kneeled on his neck for a number of minutes even as Floyd cried out that he couldn’t breathe. Widely seen bystander video sparked protests in the city, including violence, arson and theft, and quickly spread around the country.

Chauvin was fired soon after Floyd’s death. He is scheduled for trial March 8 on charges including second-degree murder and manslaughter. Three other officers at the scene, also since fired, are scheduled for trial later this year.

Just a matter of time before this happens again. When it does, the riots will recommence.

Sounds like Bill Barr took some time off from the bagpipes to incite a little insurrection.

Is this actual sedition?  thinking face

How do you figure? If I was on the jury I am pretty sure I would vote to acquit. If I was an appellate judge, I would have to defer to the jury as to the facts in the case. WEak evidence is not grounds for appeal, but can be grounds for dismissal.

Tragic. Every cop should have a go bag, complete with cash and a passport under a new name. They should put some bitcoin aside also.

When something like this happens you may have a day or so window to recognize and hit the road to South America. This current “life” may have just become untenable.

And according to one report, his actions were exactly those of the police training film, a worthy defense.

I say fake. A couple of anonymous left wing hacks created story. It’s always the anonymous insiders who cannot be identified that release this garbage.

So what would you have done? Keep in mind that he was NBA/NFL sized, and hopped up on dope. Also remember there was an angry crowd pressing in from all sides that demanded he keep at least half his concentration on them.

For extra credit, tell us how many times you have subdued a human animal that large and out of his mind.

And as for combat soldiers, the exquisite difference between your ER experience, and theirs, is that soldiers also work knowing that they might be just as dead as the guy they saw die at ANY second.

Tired of medical people claiming “war zone” experience, and “hero” and “front line” status. If it isn’t in suffocating heat, numbing cold that turns your toes and nose black, dusty choking urban chalk dust... and YOU might be one of the dead ones any second, and it goes on for days or weeks, and you can’t go home at the end of a shift... it ain’t a war zone or a front line.
It just isn’t.

That is the problem with convictions in the court of public opinion based on a short video with no context and limited other evidence.

Yeah, they are. A knee to the upper center of the back is a widely taught control position.
Take your hand try to choke yourself by pressing from the back of the neck. Then try it from the front.
If you can yell I can’t breathe, you can indeed breathe. He had a sensation of being unable to breathe from the overdose. He was already yelling that before he was taken to the ground.

THAT is the whole case. The cocaine and fentanyl doper/pregnant woman armed-robbing/deviant was not strangled.

Since Floyd died of self-administered drug OD and there were no signs of trauma from Chauvin’s actions, there’s a good chance Chauvin could walk.

The cop thought “arrest” meant “cardiac arrest.”

There. I said it. I couldn’t help myself.

Exactly- i doubt the account myself- Chauvin knew he didn’t kill floyd, he knew floyd died of drug overdose- I can’t see him even entertaining the idea of 3’rd degree when he’s innocent

I don't expect a hung jury. I expect them all to be found not guilty.

See the Freddie Gray case in Baltimore as a good parallel.

[[The autopsy report showed that Floyd had something like twice the average lethal amount of fentanyl in his system, had severely blocked arteries, and also did not die of asphyxiation.]]

Floyd had several drugs in his system, the fentanyl was enough to kill him alone- and his lung condition is pretty indicative of hte fact that it did

It does not support the left's narrative that Floyd was repeating "I can't breathe" before he was put on the ground. Fentanyl produces respiratory depression.

I don't like what Chauvin did, but I think he encountered a fentanyl overdose in progress.

I hope the truth matters in his trial.

So what would you have done? Keep in mind that he was NBA/NFL sized, and hopped up on dope. Also remember there was an angry crowd pressing in from all sides that demanded he keep at least half his concentration on them.

Given that he was handcuffed I almost certainly wouldn't have put my knee on his neck.I would have taken other steps to control him.

For extra credit, tell us how many times you have subdued a human animal that large and out of his mind.

More than a few times. There were many times when the aides couldn't handle a patient alone

And as for combat soldiers, the exquisite difference between your ER experience, and theirs, is that soldiers also work knowing that they might be just as dead as the guy they saw die at ANY second.

That's true. However,do a little research and you'll find that ER staff...particular in big cities...are often threatened *and* assaulted.I could tell of my own experiences but won't.

Tired of medical people claiming “war zone” experience, and “hero” and “front line” status. If it isn't in suffocating heat, numbing cold that turns your toes and nose black, dusty choking urban chalk dust... and YOU might be one of the dead ones any second, and it goes on for days or weeks, and you can't go home at the end of a shift... it ain't a war zone or a front line.

I never claimed to be a hero and never would.I know that my experiences, although vivid and sometimes frightening, don't come close to what guys experienced in WWII,Korea,Vietnam.Iraq or Afghanistan. But,as I said above,my experiences weren't all skittles and beer.
