Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González said that the proposed increase in the minimum wage to $15 an hour could “kill” local production.
“At the congressional level, the President (Joseph Biden) has talked about supporting amendments to the federal minimum wage. This is under review. There has been talk about being in Bill 21, [but] we haven’t been told yet,” González said.
“We have to manage this matter with a lot of caution since, while it’s true that no one can live off the federal minimum wage, not to mention we have such a high poverty level in Puerto Rico, we have to see how that impacts the island, really affects local production, how it affects businesses and jobs here on the island,” she added.
[González] also pointed out that “we have to see how [the increase in the minimum wage] affects local production, businesses, jobs here on the island, the balance between importing 90% of the food we eat and wanting to produce those imports locally, and what impact the increase could have.”
She announced that she has asked her economic group for a report on the impact [the increase] would have on Puerto Rico.
“I want to know if Puerto Rico is prepared,” she stressed as she mentioned how this could result in layoffs.
“This is a complex matter that has to be reviewed by the government and the private sector. In the case of manufacturing and local production, we want to replace importation with local production, but it may happen that we kill local production,” she stated.
González made her statements after meeting with the members of her Private Sector Task Force where their agenda for the 117th Congress was discussed.
Puerto Rico ping
Butt, butt, butt think how many people it will lift out of poverty. Or, raise the unemployment benefits to the equivalent of $15.00/hr. ? Holy Cow. I better call the white house STAT! and tell them my idea...............
Just all part of CCP Biden's plan.
Vote for independence then.
Part of the plan. Destruction of western civilization. That’s the goal.
You’re right.
The commissioner is, for once, right.
The root of this is the cancellation of the tax treatment by Clinton that gave PR an opportunity to lure business to the island.
