Looks like that original comment got pulled. I was in the Air Force in the 1980s, and the National Anthem was played across the base on loudspeakers at the the official end of the workday - usually 4 PM or 4:30 PM. Everyone outside was required to stop walking and talking while it was playing, and if you were in uniform, you turned toward the nearest flag or toward the base HQ even if you could not see it, and hold a hand salute until it was finished. In fact, most of us saluted, even if we happened to be in civilian attire. We were so honored to be service members. Even the civilians on base were patient and respectful of it.
All cars on base were required to stop while it was playing, as well, and the drivers were supposed to sit at attention, too. I never had that particular experience, because I avoided being in my car to avoid that stopping. Times sure have changed.
