Looks like that original comment got pulled. I was in the Air Force in the 1980s, and the National Anthem was played across the base on loudspeakers at the the official end of the workday - usually 4 PM or 4:30 PM. Everyone outside was required to stop walking and talking while it was playing, and if you were in uniform, you turned toward the nearest flag or toward the base HQ even if you could not see it, and hold a hand salute until it was finished. In fact, most of us saluted, even if we happened to be in civilian attire. We were so honored to be service members. Even the civilians on base were patient and respectful of it.
All cars on base were required to stop while it was playing, as well, and the drivers were supposed to sit at attention, too. I never had that particular experience, because I avoided being in my car to avoid that stopping. Times sure have changed.

We played the anthem every morning during colors and, when visiting another country, their national anthem also. We had onboard cassette tapes of every countries national anthem in a library maintained by the quartermaster. Underway there was no color ceremony.

Thank you for your service and the post. As I thought, for 21 years, it is impossible for one to NOT to hear the US national anthem and you are in the US Armed forces?? Clearly, someone is LYING about their service. MY cousin serves near the DMZ Sokor and he told me the same thing: every morning.

Since the national anthem has become about the performer and not the country, I am leaning toward the do not play at sporting events opinion. I really don't want to spend 5 minutes listening to some singer trill and make runs of notes at a snail's pace without accompaniment.

Or just playback a Rene Rancourt video from a Boston Bruins game. He did O Canada as well.

I was singe and living in the dorm in Germany. I had been there almost two years before I even knew the base played taps every night.

We were in my room drinking some beer and decided to open the window for some odd reason. At about 9 or 10 PM we hear it playing very faintly across the base.

That song has always done a job on my heart, so I suddenly decided to stop partying any further that night. It made me put my life in some perspective for the moment.
