In a blow to the restart of the cruise industry, the Canadian government banned cruise ships from its waters through the rest of the year.

Been listening to Seattle talk radio who are saying this will be a $500M hit (at least) to thst economy.

Foreign built ships (virtually all ships in the cruise biz) can not sail between two US ports without a foreign port stop in-between (Jones Act). So without a British Columbia port call (Victoria BC), the Alaska cruise trade is dead (bye bye Skagway, Ketchikan etc)

Wouldn't be surprised if that is the intent.

The only thing government seems capable of lately is putting people out of work and businesses into bankruptcy.

Oh and raid the treasury... and set the FBI on everyone they don't like.

It costs a lot of money to maintain those ships even when they are not earning money. They can’t be shut down. To do so would cause incredible problems, like mold in the air conditioners. So, they are crewed. Some must leave the ports they are in and travel to international waters on a regular basis to dump their tanks. We’re talking millions of dollars. So, what are the companies doing? Scrapping ships for their metal. We are talking about ships with decades of useful live left. The cruise business is probably over forever. That’s thousands of people who have to find new careers. It’s millions of people in poor countries that relied on those ships for a big portion of their income, becoming very poor and possibly starving.

For everything the government does, there should be a cost benefit study.

could do, but would require almost all cruises be 15 or more days. also, many of the eastern Canadian provinces depend on the cruise industry.

The most worthless port I ever visited was Victoria, Canada. No loss

The left has always been hostile to the cruise industry. With this climate change/green new deal BS, I am not surprised that they would be trying to kill the entire leisure travel industry. Allow only what they consider “essential travel”, you know, for “people like them”.

If we add it all up, travel and tourism is the largest industry in the world, and a prime socialist target: cruise lines, airlines, coaches, hotels and resorts, restaurants, sightseeing, etc. and all the logistics that are involved in sustaing it all.

Millions of jobs lost.

Well, the cruise industry has used the cover of “foreign flags” for decades in order to avoid paying taxes and, more importantly, in my opinion, to avoid all US laws regarding medical negligence and criminal liability onboard their ships. So now, they are reaping what they have sown and I, for one, hope it destroys their industry completely!

And as for the hit to Seattle’s economy, well, the hard Left City Council and utterly clueless Mayor are responsible for the hell-hole that my once beautiful Emerald City has become so, they, as well, have sown the wind and are now reaping the whirlwind!

Do I feel terrible for all of the businesses that depended on tourist dollars? Yes, I do! But sadly, MANY of the owners and employees have voted for the very politicians that have destroyed their city and their livelihood...hoping they wake up reverse course soon but I am not holding my breath!!

The Jones act was a protectionist measure. Protected the US cruise business and probably primarily —unions. But also reduced US jobs as companies came to rely on foreign flag registration.

Yes, very little will survive this lockdown.

Sounds like a Great Reset in progress.

Well, I worked as a kitchen manager in Yukon feeding of Skagway.
We had about 35 full size buses (1,200 people) for lunch and some activities a day.

Most of the staff was European, few Aussies a few Canadians, mostly management.

Paid the kids next to nothing, Charged $400/m per bunk bed. Just pure Greed.

I do not feel that bad for them.

Oh I am well aware that the cruise industry has gotten RICH off of the backs of poor people from around the world - paying them next to nothing while charging their customer exorbitant prices. AND, something that most cruise passengers do NOT realize - there are almost no background checks at all of those “nice” people who are making your drinks, preparing your meals, cleaning your cabins, or babysitting your kids!!

As I said, there are some restaurants and souvenir shops in Seattle that will probably not survive the loss of the cruise industry but many of them COULD have survived anyway with regular tourism if they had not voted for the absolutely crazy Communists on the city council, who love homeless drug addicts and hate police officers!!

I for one would like my city back but it is probably too late, so I guess I’ll just have to pack up and move to a red state...terrible shame to see what has become of such a once beautiful place!

This is a huge economic hit to Seattle.

In the summer time we have cruise ships traveling up the inland Canadian waterways to Alaska almost every day.

Many people will spend a weekend or even a whole week in Seattle right before or right after their cruise.

I know a lot of people hate Seattle at Free Republic, but this means thousands of tourist related jobs will disappear for another year.

Philippines and Thailand lost their entire tourism businesses. For those two countries, that’s a majority of national income.

Nothing would make me happier than Seattle disappearing from the face of the earth.

This is a “good news” story as far as I’m concerned.
