American Airlines says it may have to furlough as many as 13,000 employees

FORT WORTH, Texas — Two American Airlines executives are warning that decreased travel volumes means the company may have to furlough up to 13,000 employees, according to a letter sent to employees Wednesday.

CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom wrote that without an extension of the Payroll Support Program beyond the end of March, they will have more employees than the flight schedule requires.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines had expected to be back to a full summer schedule of flights, the letter said. However, due to slow vaccine rollout and the added requirement for a negative COVID-19 test for international flight, volumes were down 45% compared to the beginning of last year.

Stop with the drama queen act. Others will take their place. Let these liberal institutions die off.

Flew AA a few weeks ago to see my Dad in hospice.
On a route I flew many times before.

First off all, the flights to Dallas were about half of what the used to be. But the flight was full.

Then the flights to Seattle were less than before also. SeaTac looked like a ghost town. All boarded up, couldn’t find a sandwich after I landed.

Flight back was the same.

Rental car place was empty. Which never happened before.

I believe they have already received two suitcases full of money to keep them operating.

They’ll just nationalize the airlines. It’ll be like flying the old Soviet Aeroflot...except worse.

So we don’t fly until then. Lovely. Guess they have to hurry to finish that bridge from Los Angeles to Honolulu, as well as the bridge/ tunnel from New York to London? And the one from Honolulu to Tokyo? Guess it’s done as well.

Anyone got a half-billion lying around to start a new airline?

Wanted to try it, do I did once. Aeroflot from Amsterdam to Moscow, then on to Hong Kong. Then Cebu Pacific from Hong Kong to Cebu.

Aeroflot wasn’t that bad. And it flew Boeing 777s

They have some gnarly looking old hags berating first class passengers (yes I was there) for not wearing masks completely over their noses and such similar total BS. I knew AA was going under the last time I flew.

You are conflating these companies upper level management with their employees, like the pilots. The upper level management will make out just fine. A lot of pilots, mechanics, flight attendants, and so on, will be out of work in, most likely, a tail-spinning economy.

Thank you for posting, Captain! I am always praying for my pilots as I am a nervous flier (=real bad turbulance once; before that I loved it), and so grateful to land safely every time. Reading most pilots are conservative (=sane) is comforting, thanks for mentioning.

Much respect,

CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom wrote that without an extension of the Payroll Support Program beyond the end of March, they will have more employees than the flight schedule requires.

So instead of reducing staffing they want the rest of us non or seldom fliers to pay for their excess employees, through our taxes allotted to the Payroll Support Program.

I’m talking Aeroflot of the 1980s and early 90s... long before the 777. One of the guys I used to fly with was a former Aeroflot stew. He said half the seats didn’t have working seat belts.

good, lay them off - most are union workers anyway and in all likelihood voted for the democrats.

They can get jobs working on the keystone pipeline instead....

I hate to see people lose their jobs, but the airlines need to be punished for the way they treat their customers.
