Many of the comments here are fascinating. Thank you.
I remain bullish on America and its great Constitution, scrupulously rigorous and at the same time resilient and adaptable nearly 250 years later. We cannot be complacent, and yet the circumstances also call for trust and resolve.
We are focused, perhaps as we should be in the moment, on one skirmish or another as it unfolds. I am heartened by the larger landscape, which I believe favors freedom and progress.
Both sides have made grave errors, but the left’s are bigger, more impactful, and more frequent; and the left is determined in every instance to jump the shark, as if this is the only position to take. In so doing they dig themselves deeper and deeper into the swamp.
After their mistakes, the right seems to regroup and react well, in this instance as in many others. The leadership seems to be rising to the occasion (or to end up fully exposed and discredited, as in the case of L. Cheney). Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and various others have been wonderful spokespersons. Mitch McConnell is playing his important role, and though he should be more supportive of Donald Trump he does not deserve as much scorn as he gets on Free Republic.
The right’s base seems to me almost Zen in its good judgement and principled support, notwithstanding mistakes that can make it tempting for them to fold. The right also seems at this point well trained to tune out noise and confusion generated by the left. It is amazing to me that this support remains rock solid and even keeled when elites across the board are so collectively bent on advancing the left at all costs. (Did anyone see all of those Super Bowl ads? Remarkable!)
We need to keep our faith in our core institutions.
